Oddly enough, http://www.5558800.com/ worked for me (at the suggestion of a friend).
But yeah, I switched browsers and it opened fine. Strange!

In very simple terms, how does a novice do this?

If you're using Windows box, try to download and run this:

https://www.microsoft.com/security/pc-security/malware-removal.aspx

It's free and will catch most of the common viruses.

Also, Windows Defender is another great and free utility that you can run.

....But truly the best one is malwarebytes, it gives you a great real-time protection, but costs money to use it.

All 3 of these will spit out a report for you at the end of the run, that will show you the potential problems that you might have on your machine.
