#38Whats wrong with Pete betting on sports. At the time.. YES! Wtf were you thinking PETE?? Betting on your own team.. =-
Regardless this was YEARS ago!! Cmon baseball.. get over it.. How many players since have cheated MUCH, MUCH worse..
Cheated the game, the stats, the players, all the way down.. much worse than ol Petey..
Espn talks about betting on sports.. shit they show it all over there websites/tv everywhere..
and where would US sports be without such a huge media source??
So after all these years your still gonna Ban the ALL-TIME HIT KING???Comment -

#391) Because he's a USDA prime buffoon.
He acts like a clown where if he showed a little humility he'd have ten times a greater chance of getting into the Hall.
2) Admitted today he still bets 'recreationally'
3) The very definition of the word compiler.
Hung on six years after he should have retired to chase a hit crown.
Pretty much hurt every team he played for those last six years.
4256 hits is dimminshed when you factor in he had 15,890 plate appearances.
.303 batting average - 172 players that had more than 3000 plate appearances had a higher batting average.
Not very impressive.
4) Crappy power numbers.
Out of the players that had more than 3000 plate appearances, Rose ranks 872, James Loney ranks higher for the love of God.
Also crappy base stealer.
198 stolen bases in 24 years, caught stealing 149 times.
I am not worthy.
He did two things great.
Hustled his ass off, and hit singles.
Period.

#41what part of lifetime ban do people have a problem understanding?
He's my favorite player all time but he should never be allowed into the HOF. He bet on MLB and his own team. He lied about it also. Hell of a great baseball player but actions do have consequences.Comment -

#45"During our meeting, Mr. Rose told me that he has continued to bet on horse racing and on professional sports, including baseball. Those bets may have been permitted by law in the jurisdictions in which they were placed, but this fact does not mean that the bets would be permissable if made by a player or manager subject to Rule 21."Comment -

#47He's a HOF caliber player but he really is the most overrated player ever. Some talk about him like he was in the same class as Williams, Mays, Aaron etc. And he's not really close. He was a good singles hitter who lasted forever and didn't get hurt.Comment -

#50Yeah but he was always rich and always had issues with gambling.
The stories make it sound bad.
Lost $1.25 million in a golf tournament.
Stories about how he spent all night playing poker and played the next day during '92 olympics.
Lost $5 mill in one night playing craps in Vegas.
Up till 2:30 AM playing bj in atlantic city during the '93 Eastern Conference Finals.
Wouldn't be surprised if the guy was betting hoops the opening night of 03-04 season.Comment -

#51Nasher.....if you eliminate the second half of your argument.....
It sounds like you are describing yourself.
Eliminate the MLB stats & we are talking about you!
A guy who should not have anything in his professional career discredited because he bets on sports.
You aren't prepared to say today "I promise not to gamble anymore.". Nor should you have to.
Whether you bet on sports, currently bet on sports or intend to continue to bet on sports, it shouldn't have anything to do with your professional accomplishments.
All this bullshit doesn't matter, the bottom line is .....where is the compassion? When do you just show some compassion & forgiveness & let the man die happy?Comment -

It doesn't matter what assholes like Bud Selig or Rob Manfred say, Pete Rose will die a Hall of Famer, whether they sign off on it, or not.
Pete Rose loves the game of baseball and he offers an autograph session unlike anyone else. He wants to sit and talk with you about the game of baseball. He loves the game more than anyone else and he has been talking with fans like us for more than 50 years about the game he loves. That's right fans like us here at SBR who gamble on every game we can get our hands on.
We all know that Pete Rose continues to gamble on sports, this is why we should all embrace him and not to scratch his accomplishments. Because we are gamblers and we understand.Comment -

He actually might have had more hits than he did in Japan had he started his career in the states. Not to mention they play more game here. That was kind of my point, not that his hits from Japan should be considered, more so just the years that he could have been playing here.Comment -

#59I was a huge fan of Pete when he played... The intensity, he brought to the game was unmatched and THE BIG RED MACHINE at Cinn, would NOT have been the same team without him.. (The world series rings are even in doubt without his bat) He played hard each and every at bat and his slide at home plate in an All Star game showed his passion alone (Did he bet it I don't know). But he's an ass today and I think he knows it and doesn't really care, unless being in the Hall of Fame is worth something financially to him. Then he cares.Comment -

In 1921 the babe had more home runs than half of the teams in the league on his own.
Gehrig had 5 400+ total base seasons. There have only been 28 400+ total base seasons ever and in the last 50 years it has only been done 7 times total.Comment -
