How is that worse? I'm a Cards fan and absolutely hate the Cubs, but at least Coughlan was going for the bag, Kang is going to get taken out 99% of the time in that situation. Many times middle infielders stand behind the bag for at least a little protection, but Utley intentionally avoided the bag so he could take a cheap shot. Not even comparable.

Why not just slide head first with your fist in to the 2nd baseman face? Seems like this could break-up the double play, and is a hard baseball play.

I don't think it was that bad. Tejada wasn't paying attention. That is on him. Doing a pirouette when trying to execute a double play will get you injured.

Jose Altuve has almost been taken out twice because of bullshit "slides" like this. There needs to be a rule that a slide must be instigated a certain distance from the bag. Quite a few of these double plays can still be broken up with textbook slides into the bag.

I hadn't seen it until just now , I played a little ball in my time and thats not that bad of a slide imo, his slide starts even with the bag and he's about a foot at most away from the baseline < thats key , his job is to break up the double play , if you played baseball you would know what that means ... The problem is Tejada broke his own leg by spinning from one side of the bag turning his back to the play and actually spinning right into Utley's line to the bag making this all possible , it was bang bang , he didn't slide 3 -4 feet from the bag like we see all year long ... all Tejada had to do was tap the bag step back and chuck it to first ...... being pretty got his leg broke . Thats the way I see it . That pic above of Murphy for the Mets sliding into second vs the Dodgers is what illegal looks like by the way . Have a great day
