that's different because the punting team is the team in possession of the ball before the batting happens. so while it's illegal batting in that case, the penalty is never called because the defense would never accept the penalty. if they did, it would wipe out the safety and the punting team would get to replay the down.

That makes sense. It doesnt seem like Seattle knew the rule then. IF they had, the guy that knocked it out would have dove on it. Nobody from Detroit was even close to recovering the ball. Refs obviously didnt realize the rule or simply didnt want to call it (in the "spirit of the game".
