I've always been intrigued by long hikes. By most peoples standards, I've done multiple hikes that lasted weeks and a few that lasted a month.

However, six months is another beast entirely.

One of the fringe reasons for moving to Seattle, that really didn't factor into the decision but I always hoped it might happen, is to hike the entire PCT, all 2650 miles of it. By most accounts, it would probably take anywhere between 3-5 months, depending on who is with me, weather, snake bites, bear attacks, immigrant orgies and the such. I should probably add rooster ring, condoms, valtrex and penicillin to my bag.

Winds were around 30-35mph, I hooked the back of my knee on one cast and reeled in nothing more than seaweed on the rest. I cast no more than 10 times, packed up and went for a beach hike. Got past by two oil trains and one coal train. I bet they were headed from Opies Ranch to Bigdays place.

Talk to me about raising yard birds in the city

Kraken, I didn't know you flyfish. Good stuff. One of my favorite hobbies.

Use to hack it out in the woods once a year for close to 5 days. We were only allowed
three items each and no one knew what the other would bring.

I prefer to pack light for the most part. Haven't done many multi-day pack trips, but
have the itch to do one after watching the documentary Mile...Mile and a Half (on Netflix).
Such a great documentary--recommend it.

One thing that I never forget is my favorite Danish pipe and Frog Morton's Cellar (type of pipe tobacco).
Duct tape is useful too--often I will tape up my heel as a blister preventative. Lifestraw is a solid buy if you
are in North America.

good, strong yaks fetch a lot at the market, they carry everything and often i ride it myself

Yep, been flyfishing since about 10. Grew up fishing for trout in the White River in Arkansas. Pretty country in the ozarks. Been a hobby ever since. I've been wanting to get into Montana for a week or two, I hear that's the holy grail for fly fishing.

I bought apipe a few months ago and have been quite enjoying it.

Montana is fun for sure, but the best water and scenery that I've fished are in Oregon and Washington. Utah also has some top notch fishing and some great scenery, but there's something about fishing on an Oregon or Washington river, where the water is icy, tall, old growth trees are all around, and moss engulfs the forest floor.

I haven't. Interesting though.

If I have to be quiet on my way to a certain spot, I'll simply do it at non peak times. Middle of night or during the day. Get to where I need to be and camp out for hours if I have to.

Not much of a hiker. Used to camp until the wife said no more. I live less than a mile from the river with the best
small mouth fishing. Take my 14' john boat up river and float back to the ramp. Use fly rod and spinning rods.
Artificial bait, catch and release, except for the big one I wanted for the man cave.

I tie my own flies and honestly, for the better part of the last 10 years, I've de-barbed every hook I've ever tied on. On long hikes (<7 days) i'll bring a few flies that aren't de-barbed, mainly out of being paranoid that I'll be starving and the only fish I hook will escape and I'll starve to death but 99.9% of the fishing I do now is catch and release.

And for that reason, there's absolutely no reason to have barbs. It causes a lot of infections in fish after being released.

So I would encourage anyone planning on catching and releasing, to get a pair of pliers and get rid of the barb. There's just no need for it.

A good way to test it, I've actually had a ranger ask me to do this, is to stick it through your shirt and pull it back through. If it catches, there's still a barb. And in some areas, that will get ya a ticket. If it smoothly comes out, no barb, no ticket but mostly, its just better for the fish we never intended on keeping anyways

Barbless hooks aren't going to work for smallmouth, pal. Guarantee you might land 1 out of 10 like that. Pretty much the same goes for largemouth as well.

Lower than 55 deg, and they'll put up a fight but They can still be caught just fine on barbless hooks.

Fly fishing for Salmon is a different story. Pinks are ok on barbless hooks but coho and steelhead, not so much. Probably more similar to bass fishing.

That being said, I only fish a handful of times a year now. Once I got out...I was out. It was the competition that drove me more than anything else, and that aspect of it was done.

But I've caught 1000's & 1000's of them, so, much like my gambling...I have a major fukkin clue!
