Deaths in Indy always seem to be on the oval courses too.

Sad because Indy one of the few series in the world that drives a combination of oval and road / street courses. Drivers need both skill sets.

Top guys make 7 figures, others are in the lower 6 figures.
Plus: lot of guys actually have to bring money from sponsors/family to get a team.
Market has gone down anyway, in the early 2000s, top guys were making more than they are now.
When Paul Stoddart brought Justin Wilson in his Minardi team in 2003 (Formula 1), Wilson actually had to pay 5 million for this cockpit f.e.

The guy he hit was dead on impact. The young lad was carrying a 20 kg fire extinguisher that hit Pryce's helmet and nearly decapitated him - dead on impact as well.
