#7One of the interesting things they found out about Secretariat after he died was his heart was 3X the normal size of a thoroughbred horse and it weighed about 22 lbs....a total freak of a horseComment -

Today, the normal weight of a horse’s heart is 8.5 pounds. Even though Secretariat’s heart was not weighed at autopsy, Dr. Thomas Swerczek, head pathologist at the University of Kentucky, estimated it at 22 pounds after finding the second-largest heart in Sham (Secretariat’s Triple Crown rival) and weighing it at 18 pounds.Comment -

#9Yeah the triple crown really brought out the journalists trying to write about horse racing without doing any research whatsoever.
Secretariat ran on the fastest track the Belmont Stakes has ever souped up. While even with a fast track Saturday , American Pharoah basically ran on beach compared to it.
So in that video they should have Secretariat running on asphalt with Pharoah running in quicksand.
Believe it or not a lot of things change in 40 years. Especially now with the PETA nuts running around. The cushion depth of the Belmont track is about 30% deeper than back then. All in an effort to try and make the surface safer for horses.
Now do I think he would have beat Secretariat? No , but I could be wrong. Comparing raw times even day to day let alone from decades ago is very misleading and proves nothing.Comment -

#11I dont think the track difference of an inch less cushion even at belmont back then and more sand would have helped any horse facing secretariat that day but really hard to measure. Belmont may be deeper and may have more cushion but I read this article on butch lehr and he said the tracks havent really changed at all at churchill since Secretariat.
Secretariat has held the speed records at all three tracks in the triple crown ,at the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and the Belmont Stakes for 43 years now and counting. This is not a small achievement, most records in sports only last a few years now, forget lebron, jordan, babe ruth, gretzky etc. That is an incredible record.
