Joe Maddon tossed: "All 5 runs because the ump is penetrating blind"
Or something like that. 3-run HR after home plate ump missed inning-ending strike down the pipe. Nobody thinks about umps affecting games. It happens.

Not necessarily fixed. Just really bad human error. Some errors are bigger than others.

I used to think that way when I was unworldly. Now I'm not naive. It's all fixed!

archie i do think maddon is a good manager
however today maddon was a sore loser. guy tried to blame the umps for the cubs loss.
maddon said the umps gave the padres all 5 runs.

BTW the quote in this thread was my lip reading of what he said toward the umpire. And he absolutely had to do it and did the right thing. That's being a leader, not a baby. After the game, he took the high road.

I don't think that its as much the umps are making more bad calls, than it is how technology has gotten so much better in unmasking their bad calls.

yep that was the first strike call umpires missed all year, what an atrocity
if managers threw tantrums every time an umpire missed a ball strike call then managers would get ejected every game
u gotta accept the bad calls with the good calls

Until you realize that nothing matters but the final score, you will always be a losing bettor. Golden State creamed the Pelicans today but couldn't cover the -12. There's no way you would bet the Pelicans by watching how they played, they're not even close to the Warriors, but yet choosing the Pelicans with 12 was the winning bet. Bad calls by umpires, players dropping the ball, teams allowing a late three-pointer, a late cover touchdown - all examples of why you don't watch the game if you are betting on it. Crap that you think should never happen, always happens.

Human error - that's the X-factor in sports gambling. As long as we have human umps, refs, and players there will always be that variance. Not that I've perfected anything but I've gotten better when I learned to expect the unexpected. Off my soap box for now....
