NFL Player News - Week of January 26th
CLE - WR Josh Gordon fails drug test
    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter
Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon has reportedly failed another drug test and will be subject to a one-year banishment, according to multiple league sources.

Oh man, here we go again. Gordon is a fantastic talent, but his inability to stay clean has marred his NFL career. We wouldn't be surprised to see the Browns cut Gordon.

MIA - Miami want to re-sign TE Charles Clay
Source: The Miami Herald - Barry Jackson
Miami Dolphins impending free-agent TE Charles Clay is a player that the Dolphins would like to re-sign and are expected to offer him a contract in the next few weeks.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
It's a wise move for the Dolphins. Clay is a versatile player who can be a dangerous asset on the field. Last year, Clay had 58 catches for 605 yards and three touchdowns in 14 games. The Dolphins also have an emerging talent in Dion Sims, so don't expect them to break the bank to keep Clay. He'll have to sign a team-friendly deal to stick around in 2015.

JAX - QB Blake Bortles to work out with receivers
    Source: The Florida Times-Union - Ryan O'Halloran
Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles said he plans to have a passing camp in Southern California in February with his wide receivers, tight ends and running backs in order to work on their chemistry.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We like the motivation of this young quarterback. Bortles did not improve much as a rookie, but he gained valuable experience as a 14-game starter. Working with his receivers should help them have better chemistry on the field this next season.

NFL - Marcus Mariota may not throw at Combine
Source: Honolulu Star Advertiser - Dave Reardon
University of Oregon QB Marcus Mariota (shoulder) may opt out of throwing at the NFL Combine after spraining the acromioclavicular joint in his right shoulder during the National Championship Game.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Not throwing at the Combine--and not showing up to the Senior Bowl (he was eligible to play)--could hurt Mariota's draft stock a bit. That being said, it's not going to crush his value completely. We believe Mariota will still be an option for the first overall pick, and he may not fall farther than sixth (New York Jets).

STL - Begin contract talks with WR Kenny Britt
Source: St. Louis Post-Dispatch - Jim Thomas
St. Louis Rams WR Kenny Britt and his agents have started contract talks with the team. Britt, who has been in St. Louis just one season, indicated he wanted to remain with the club past 2014.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
It's a good move for both sides. Britt still has fantastic talent, he just needs to stay healthy in order to play up to his potential. The Rams don't have great depth at the position, and they could really use a wideout like Britt in 2015. Now, they just need a quarterback to go along with him.

STL - Keeping eye on Shane Carden
Source: St. Louis Post-Dispatch - Jim Thomas
East Carolina QB Shane Harden is being looked at by the St. Louis Rams in the lead-up to the 2015 NFL Draft.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Harden was at the 2015 Reese's Senior Bowl, but he failed to impress. Our very own Cecil Lammey and Matt Waldman report that Harden struggled with accuracy and decision making during the week of practice. Harden is likely to be a fourth- or fifth-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft. His upside is that of a career backup. The Rams need to aim quite a bit higher.

BAL - Met with Sammie Coates
Source: The Baltimore Sun - Aaron Wilson
Auburn WR Sammie Coates met with Baltimore Ravens team officials during Senior Bowl week in Mobile, Ala.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Coates was very impressive during the week of practice at the Senior Bowl. He's incredibly fast, and on film was a great deep threat at Auburn. However, at the Senior Bowl Coates showed the ability to run crisp routes and gain separation against different types of coverage. He could be a late first- or early second-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft.

NE - QB Tom Brady improved out of pocket
    Source: ProFootballFocus.com - Steve Palazzolo
New England Patriots QB Tom Brady completed 12 of his 24 pass attempts on scramble plays outside of the pocket this year for 198 yards and two scores. Last year, he was 0-of-4 on similar plays.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
With the Patriots strong ground game, it's wise to move Brady around from time to time. New England has benefited from the play-action passing their rushing attack sets up.
