Looks likes my girlfriend is going to have to drop out on the trip. I'm flying into Punta Cana on the 19th and don't have any set plans at the moment but think a couple days there should be enough so likely won't be returning to Punta Cana till right before the bash.

I flew in yesterday. I waited too long to book a shuttle online and after not being able to figure out the local buses from the airport from the vague information on the internet and airport workers giving me looks like I was crazy I gave in and opted for an overpriced taxi ($35) into Bavero. Also got profiled for additional customs screening (me and another solo traveling hippy looking guy were the only ones picked) and thought I might have problems because of how much cash I was carrying (less than amount requiring disclosure but more than the typical tourist) but after half completing the entry forms (slept through their distribution on the plane), not remembering the name of my hotel (was on my phone which they wouldn't let you turn on till you cleared customs) and disclosing and flashing my puny roll I was done in about 2 minutes.
Ending up staying at a cheap aparthotel about a half mile from the beach for $35 a night which is basic but clean with functioning wifi so I'm happy with it. The part of the beach I ended up walking yesterday was the typical touristy affair (tout heavy and congested) so probably going to go check out casinos today and head either to Santo Domingo, somewhere to go hiking, or a more secluded beach location tomorrow.Comment -

If you got a couple days before the bash, I suggest getting over to Samana if you're not "tied down" to the Bavaro beach area. If you wanna get propositioned just take an early jog on the main road by the plaza or outdoor shantys selling shit. Also got some nice herb there in the shantys.
Bus cost 10 bucks one way and is about a 2.5 hour trip. A/C, bathroom on bus, grab a few beers, stuff them in your bag and head over there. It's much more beautiful than the Punta Cana area.

Samana is still touristy, but lots of adventures to be had where you don't see 100 squares everywhere you look. Not sure if there are any hostel type places there though.Comment -
