JJ - it is not all that different from windows 7, just use out of 'desktop' mode versus metro. FWIW, I still use xp when I can but use w8 just to stay current with all.

Yep I have an ultrabook that's a touchscreen tablet as well as laptop with Windows 8.
It's pretty cool, you have all your favorite apps readily available on the home screen at a touch

Not a fan of 8 personally, I think they are trying too hard to make home PC's like tablets but there is no real need to me to have every single thing as an "app" If I wanted that I would just get a tablet instead!

Windows 7 64 bit pro is best...if you're tech savvy it is very handy to have linux on a virtual machine i love kali but you might want to opt for a more beginner version. I watch mlb.tv a lot out and about and it kills mobile data, kali kills wps and solves that.
Xp was HoF but u shouldnt use it anymore especially if you handle personal docs and info regularly.
classic shell, start menu, explorer, windows 7, vista

I don't think there's many in the store anymore at all for Windows 7
I just need it for basic computing so windows a probably okay
Might go with the desktop because they are so powerful and with phones and tablets you don't really need a laptop now

I'm running 7. The wifes laptop runs 8 and is junk. Having trouble running shit from the desk top. Going into
the area with the dumb square icons, programs work better for some reason. Geek squad said to up grade to 8.1.
So there must be issues with version 8. Maybe the new computers are upgraded to 8.1. Ask before buying.

I recommend Classic Shell for those who have 8 but prefer the 7 set up, or if you even want a different set up such as Windows 95 you can do that too. Great program and free of charge.
I'm here to help.

I use Windows 8 with my Surface tablet. The very first thing I do every single time it boots is switch to the classic Windows layout.
