Spotting the Football HAS to Improve
Too much technology to not use it

My phone can be tracked to within a few yards from outer space

I work with 3D matrix technology that spot a wire who within 1mm

Yet this multi billion industry uses some old mans eyes????

    Joke

If you watched the game you'd know the spot wasn't the issue at all - the measurement was clearly wrong. You can see in the photo that the tip of the ball clearly didn't pass the last chain link, not to mention the space between the tip and actual marker. Surely the refs will end up being fined and reprimanded by the NCAA (as is customary with these situations) when they realize how bad they screwed up. Still a good game overall, just wish we would've been given the opportunity to lose it on a turnover or another missed field goal instead of the refs.

The rules of the game are known before a wager is placed.

It was a bad spot yes. He easily had the first down. It shouldn't have even been that close. Are you blind?

It's obvious there was no clear view of the ball crossing the first down marker. His body fell over the line by the end, but you couldn't see where the ball was at the time he was actually down - the commentators even mentioned it was impossible to see the actual spot, at least from the camera angles. The whole gripe was never with the spot though, it was with the flawed measurement - the tip of the ball didn't clear the last chain link at all, and that was more obvious than anything else.

Vinnie that game should've ended after the 1st OT - Driskel clearly didn't get that snap off before the clock hit zero, refs didn't call it, and now Florida will win it because of that missed call. That's at least 2 games tonight that the refs have decided.

Always thought they should have lasers that go across at the first down marker.....either leave on the field or use them if necessary in replay

I'm sure we'll see that or something similar within the next few years

Either way, He definitely got the first down on the initial push....Can't convince me otherwise

No it wouldn't. Ball could hit the ground and you could reach forward. GPS wouldn't tell you when the ball crossed the line. GPS only around 100 feet accuracy in some locations. Stop laying road chalk, Kraken. Drink a Starbucks, you hipster fukk!

Except that we don't actually have the technology to do this. Tracking the location of the ball doesn't tell you where it should be spotted. All it can do is give you a maximum or limit in each direction, but in between it's up to the humans to decide where it is when the play ends.

Rule on first downs in NCAA is that as long as tip of ball is touching last link of chain then it's a first down. Marker pole has nothing to do with it.

How is that going to help when no one can tell when the player's knee (or other part of his body) is down? You plan on putting sensors all over every single body part of every single player on the field while you're at it? Not to mention all those sensors would do nothing when a judgment call like forward progress comes into play.

Football is an obscenely inexact science and nothing can be done to change that.
