Clearly this was a clash between the front office and the manager. Let go of Porter's mentor, David Trembley also. As an Astro fan, I'm extremely concerned about our direction now. First the TV situation with Comcast Houston, then the draft debacle, and now this. I wasn't expecting us to be winning tons of games at all but Bo actually kept our team competitive.

#3the guy who fired him deserves a swift kick in the nut sack!
that man did a hell of a job considering the talent he was given to work with.
the houston astros are the cheapest and poorest run franchise in all of sports.
that man clearly got fired bc he was a brother. Racist mofukkers in Texas man!Comment -

#9His batting has improved over the season. Has got a good eye at the plate, and his defense has been great. He's no better than a 4th outfielder on a regular team, but the kid has heart.Comment -

#10I'm watching the presser now.
Who ever said Porter was a big league manager in the first place?
Oh, Luhnow did, and he pretty much just said "I'm responsible for this shitty signing"Comment -

#11I don't believe a "big name" manager will enter the Houston market without some DEFINITE say in personnel matters! I don't see Luhnow or Crane allowing that to happen, so NO big time managerial talent will be coming here.Comment -

#14Had some time to think about this. I respect Nolan Ryan when it comes to what he has done in baseball, on and off the field. He had to be on board with this decision. Enough to where Luhnow announced yesterday that Nolan will be part of the hiring process for the new manager. Looks like there might have been a lot going on that the public was not made aware of. Richard Justice listed a few things:
Some unnamed players were weary of Porter's abilities as a manager from the very beginning.
There was tension between Porter and Luhnow from Day 1, with Porter reportedly interrupting Luhnow on multiple occasions during a meet and greet with the players.
Because of this tension, this was assumed to be inevitable, with Justice asserting Porter would have likely been gone during the offseason. The latest stories about unrest just sped things up.
Justice had an interesting take on Luhnow's statement:
Luhnow said the team's won-loss record -- 110-190 under Porter -- was his responsibility, which is damning to Porter on several levels. In other words, he didn't dismiss Porter for losing too many baseball games. He dismissed him because he no longer respected Porter's leadership skills and his ability to be a team player in the organization.
Some of Porter's managerial motivation tactics were deemed somewhat juvenile.
The Great Appel Bullpen Hubbub may in fact have been the "breaking point" for Luhnow and Porter.Comment -

#17More New age baseball where the nerd buried in sabermetrics thinks he knows the game. Luhnow sounds just like John Daniels. Read stories suggesting he was involved or wanted to be involved in day-2-day strategy. And thought Porter was overmatched in games. Why the fukk did you hire him then clown?
Luhnow has done well cleaning up Ed Wade's dumpster fire, but his next hire better be right or he'll be gone next time. Interested to see if they do give Biggio a look this time. Seeing as he's Luhnow's boy, might be someone he tries since he'll get to be puppet master.Comment -

Micromanaging nerd.
Can't stand micromanagers, they don't see the big picture.
Having said that, my buddy works for the Astro's, (media relations) and he says Luhnow was a good scout for St. Louis, but his forte is really bean counting, he has an advanced business degree out of Penn.Comment -
