#37That, plus they're better.
Every 4 years we're told the age of soccer is dawning in the US. And the news shows fans in US cities going bonkers for Team USA.
But when the last week of August rolls around we're watching football and won't see another soccer game until 2018.
We've had a long look at both sports and don't choose soccer. Deal with it.Comment -

#38Shea's points are valid, however, the soccer ratings are up, and the interest is up.
Of course it'll never be our pastimeComment -

#41Sorry to burst your bubble, but there is no such thing as American sport - it's all commercials. I stopped watching football on TV a long time ago, the advertising is just unbearable. I either watch it at the field or don't.
Not to mention that compared to rugby, NFL is a bunch of fat pus-s-ies pushing each other in full protective gear for 5 sec. of game play, then hit the oxygen mask during 5 min of commercials. And god forbid you even look at the QB the wrong way - 15 yard penalty... You can't claim that a sports is "manly" when there is a penalty for "holding"...RBs and WRs are the only athletes in NFL, everything else is just lard.
NBA - interesting only when players the size of Muggsy Bogues play it. Otherwise - boring as shit. Still, an international sport, not really American. US routinely gets its ass kicked in the Olympics, the only time when we can measure with other countries.
Baseball - is that even considered a sport? If you can chew tobacco while doing it - it's not really a sport now, is it? Blows my mind when baseball players do roids, wtf for?!?
Soccer - it could get boring at times, but you can't beat 45 min of sport without any commercial breaks. Which is why soccer will never be as popular in the US - you can't load it with TV ads like the NFL. I'm fine with that, though. This way I can continue to watch the EPL in peaceBut keep in mind that Dish Network has 4 dedicated soccer channels and only one NFL (and all they do is show reruns of some old ass games).

#43The major appeal soccer has on over every USA sport is no commercial breaks
That is what I found very appealing and Me engaged this whole tournamentComment -

#44You smoke crack and suck at math. The Dodgers have the highest average attendance at 46,187 per game, Cleveland with the lowest at 16,833 per game.
Attendance last year at Michigan - 115,109 for the game against Notre Dame. Face it, nobody watches baseball but a handful of old dudes and the kids they force to be bored to death.Comment -

The same sport where fans riot constantly and end up with mass deaths in the process?
The same sport that fans kill the refs because they don't like the outcome?Comment -

#49Since 1936 the US has appeared in 17 Olympic games in basketball. We've won gold 14 times, got raked over the coals in 1972 against the Soviets where the refs gave them 2 do overs (first time not taking home the gold) and we took Bronze in 1988 and 2004. We lost 3 games in 2004 which was more games in 1 year than all the other Olympics combined and ever since we've been unbeaten. Not sure where you're getting "routinely ass kicked"?
There's not a more dominant country in any other sport than US Basketball. It is an international sport today BUT we own this shit.

#51Honorable mention to the Dutch in speed skating where they've won 90 of their total 94 medals in speed skating (winter Olympics) and the Jamaican's where only 1 of their 68 Olympic medals have been in sprints. Or England's table tennis players that came from one street... Silverdale rd. While these groups have had success, none of them have the success in gold medals like US basketball.Comment -

#52This. Americans only love their own sports because they're filled with beer and fast food adverts.
Anyone who sayssoccerfootball is the most boring sport ever has either not seen Baseball, or they're the biggest liar ever.
"Batter steps up to the plate. Spits. aaaaand we'll be back after 5 minutes of adverts"
5 minutes later he swings at a ball and misses and they show more adverts.
Even insoccerfootball in America, corners, free kicks, etc.. are sponsored by McDonald's and shit
Not surprising really.Comment -

#57fulbol is an amazing sport. Like any other sport unless you know whats going on its boring. I am a fan of both american football and classic futbol. I find both amazing and fascinating. Both sports are very similar in such aspects.
Normal viewers dont understand soccer has different areas in the game like Attackers, midfielders, and a defense unless you understand all the position and strategy behind the sport its not worth watching.
Dont judge the game until you understood it. Not knowing soccer posiitons is like confusing rbs to cbs. Gotta learn the terms, positions, and play cals before you can be entertained.Comment -

QFT. This is what it all comes down to. I tried watching Rugby and Cricket I find no appeal in it because I don't fully understand the rules, nor do I know much about different strategies and what not. I didn't grow up with it. I can 1000% percent understand why baseball is boring to everyone who doesn't comprehend all the nuances and strategies to winning the game (pitching changes, shifts, bunting, hit and run, taking an extra base, etc.) Once someone sits down and really tries to learn the game, they will appreciate it and no longer find it boring. Of course, once we become adults this is all but impossible because we all have lives to live. Therefore, the sports you grow up around and know like the back of our hand are the ones we enjoy the most.
We Americans think we understand soccer, and while we know the basics, there is so much more to it than just 10 guys running around randomly trying to score.
Another example is golf. Many people find golf extremely boring but once you've played it you understand just how difficult it is to excel in it. Once you understand that, you wont mind spending your weekend watching the Masters, for example.Comment -

#69NBA Basketball is the most entertaining sport to watch because of constant action/constant scoring. Throughout the game teams will make runs and the 4th quarter is especially exciting. Watching the world cup I usually watch it on the side, doing something else. When I watch it with my full attention I usually feel drowsy and when I hear the announcer say GOOOOOAALLL that is the only exciting part. (1-5 mins of excitement in a 90 min match.Comment -
