Actually it was Stuart Elliot and his non familiarity with Belmont's configuration that beat Smarty Jones.

Too bad but that's horse racing.

Combo of Elliot's naïveté of the track, Birdstone running a really good race, and Eddington/Rock Hard Ten pressing the pace early.

there is a 25% chance we see the same kinda race from Chrome, taking the lead top stretch and lose with a 200 yards left.

Watching this again still makes me feel for Smarty.

            Tough loss. Great horse.

Yeah, but don't sell Birdstone short. Came back to win the Travers and sired 2 Triple Crown Race Winners in Mine That Bird and Summer Bird. Great call by Tom Durkin.

It would've been great if a pace setter was in this race, Smarty would've been so set if he was a stalking second position rather than the leader the whole race.

He was in good shape stalking 3rd with a decent pace. He let Eddington make him nervous down the backside wanting to keep his right eye clean. Then got antsy into the turn with the inside horse who was about done. Just a little more relaxed around the far turn and it might have worked out but Birdstone did indeed run a fine race and it was no fluke.
