Tampa Bay was 3rd in the Eastern Conference and Montreal was 4th. Why aren't the Lightning playing the 6th ranked Flyers and Montreal at #4 playing the Rangers at #5?

It is now division based. That is why all the second and third place teams from each division play each other. The only wrinkle is the two wild cards, but the winners of the 2/3 matchups face the winners of the series involving the winners of their own divisions.Comment -
