I can't think of any good long-term deals.
Rewarding players for past performances is the only reason it happens, I guess.Comment -

#43Cabrera is the face of the Tigers. I still don't know why we must prove to the world he is though? Now I see how jealousy starts in a locker room. One guy makes $500,000 a year (I don't know what the league minimum is?) And you have one guy who makes $500,000 a week? I just don't understand the philosophy on this? But clearly it's business based on a margin how much one athlete makes for the revenue of a baseball franchise. The rule of thumb in business is... you spend half of what you should make. So This 300 million investment should make the Tigers 600 million in sales. Hmmmmmmm Still don't know how it's possible?Originally posted by The GiantIt's amazing how these long-term baseball contracts never work out, yet they just keep coming.

#46I will be the first to predict but baseball is going to hit a serious financial crisis within five years
The payscales are way way too high verse any other sport
Less fans going to the game and less fans interested
You got to be a jerk off to spend $200 but your family to go to a baseball game and support the salariesComment -

#52screw that shit, its not about advanced stats. Its because the guys that vote are to penetrating lazy to look at anything but the back of a baseball card and get googly eyed over HR, RBI and AVG. And don't ever bother to watch a game a see that penetrating Baserunning and Fielded actually make a difference.Originally posted by Bill_HicksMany people who vote on these awards are conservative old farts ignorant of/hateful towards advanced stats. Check out WAR, wins above replacement. Best player on the planet on top.
Trout isn't better because some magic nerd stats made up to make him look good. He's better because he excels at huge amounts of the very basics of the game where Cabrera is clearly deficient.Comment -

#55The topper is that Detroit already had him signed for 2014 and 2015 to begin with. He should start declining around 2016....and this is where they decide to extend him 8 more years ! It's like agreeing to buying a used car a few years from now for more than a similar new model would cost.
Very few of these contracts are even remotely arguable as being not awful for the club.
I cant think of a good one for the club that is 10 years or close to it.Comment -

#57I think you mean the Triple Crown.Originally posted by broadway6We can agree to disagree. When a guy hits for the cycle and almost does it again the following year....IMO that's the best player.
Trout is already a great player...can't argue that.
He was signed for two more years. This contract extensions kicks in for the 2016 season. Miggy turns 33 in April 2016.
