1st quarter totals are always higher than other quarters. My question is why?

At first I thought the athletes were less fatigued at the beginning, but that doesn't seem to make sense really. Then I thought maybe it was coaching adjustments, but I threw that out because the 3rd quarter totals are also less than the 1st.
