Basketball line moves and bookie risk management
So lets say the books open at -3 and the line is bet up to -4.5. There is no injury news to report of, this is just "money". At this point if they are balanced they are basically at a breakeven point. At +110/+110 they make 5% but are open to a middle of 5% ie 0ev. So are they reluctant to move to the 5 even if trying to balance their book because this would expose them to a -ev middle, especially if their openers were hit by sharps whom they would expect to buy back? Does anyone have any data on average line move from open to close in the NBA?

This would depend on that specific game. The sharps would only buy back the +5 if it is +EV at that spread. It could be that it is still -EV at +5.
