No it was a bad play by the punter because he tried to pick the ball up and run forward. The safety was a good result for the Patriots but they got lucky because the punter fumbled the ball backwards and the Colts botched it out the end zone.

The punter was an idiot - he should have just kicked the ball out the back of the end zone.

Actually the result of the ensuing possession was irrelevant, taking the safety was the right play 100% of the time because it is the smart percentage play. Now I get that the stupid kicker didn't exactly "take" the safety, but my point still stands.

Yep, take the play that makes more mathematical sense.

The odds of a turnover that close to the end zone had to be so very, very small that I would have taken that safety any day of the week.
There would have been almost an automatic field goal from a very clutch Kicker who has been doing this a long time and hardly ever misses (Adam Vinatieri) as a best case scenario for the Patriots, if they didn't give up that safety. You trust your defense when you kick it off during the drive after the kick off...that comes after that safety.

All this talk about the Punter's decision by the commentators is them trying their best to let that Long Snapper off the hook after his AWFUL snap. Belichick probably destroyed that Long Snapper verbally in the locker room.
