In Russia, New Years Eve is the biggest holiday of the year and that's when everyone opens up the presents. Then you have Xmas on the 7th of Jan and Old New Year on Jan 13th....so you basically drink for two straight weeks non stop.
Old New Year comes from an old Julian calendar that was used before USSR adopted Gregorian calendar in 1918.
The Russian Orthodox Church continue to use the Julian calendar to this day.

it's not that bad my friend...that's an old stereotype that it's always super cold out here...if you look on the map Russia's spread out across many parallels and meridians on the map...we got our "always hot" places here also...Moscow happened to get all the seasons (rainy fall and spring, hot summers and somewhat cold winters).
