Same goes for nationality. Can't say: "I'm proud to be German" because it isn't my merit that I am.

I think wherever you live, you can be proud of that place. You are contributing to it and in essence it is the peoples country, its "yours" and in most cases it was also your dads/granddads etc - so theres an attachment there going back a long way.. You have also chosen to stay in that country and live your life there - so whilst it is in accident at first, i think the time and investment you make in said country entitles you to be proud of its achievements.
Its the same for your mother/brother/sister - they are also out of your hands and by accident, but you invest a lot in them, so again you can be proud if they do well in life- rather than" happy"
