Brian Hoyer was summoned by the San Francisco 49ers in March to bring experience to the offense, with the club signing the journeyman quarterback to a two-year deal in free agency. While there are question marks surrounding one of the most talent-poor rosters in the NFL, quarterback doesn’t seem to be one; at least according to general manager John Lynch, who raved about Hoyer on Wednesday.
“I think [he’s] probably exceeded my expectations of how I thought he could play,” Lynch said, per the 49ers official website. “[He’s] been very, very good. We’ve only played one preseason game and we’ve got to continue to let it develop, but he’s taking this opportunity and I think doing a tremendous job with it.”
The 31-year-old Hoyer served as the backup to Tom Brady in New England for the first three years of his career. Since then, it’s been playing time here and there, with the Cardinals, Steelers, Browns, Texans and most recently, the Bears. Despite not being recognized as a ‘franchise’ quarterback, Hoyer is going to get to the opportunity to be that guy for Lynch and the “Niners.”
“We’ve said from the beginning we want a franchise quarterback around here, and a lot of people are making assumptions as to what Brian’s role is,” Lynch added. “Our response to Brian and to everybody is he’s got the first crack of being that guy.
“And I love the way he’s embracing that opportunity each and every day and really has been a tremendous leader for our group.”Comment -
