...what song is associated with the happiest moment of your life?

For me it's Skyline Pigeon by Elton John. And not the studio cut off his first album, Empty Sky. The live performance he did for the Queen at London's Royal Festival Hall is by far the most emotional recording of it. Although it was written as a hymn and first performed on a harpsichord, it's one of pop music's finest compositions.

I was listening to it the day after I lost my virginity, driving from Oregon to California, and I must've listened to it on repeat for at least four hours. Just hearing the intro brings a smile to my face to this day.

Gordon Lightfoot is the soundtrack for the happiest time of my life.

I was 10 years old and I was in a guitar club and I had this great teacher (who focused on teaching us Lightfoot) and great friends, and I was winning scholastic awards and good at sports and music and was generally on top of the world.

Everything was innocent and impossibly hopeful.

I have a genuine emotional reaction when I hear certain Lightfoot songs. All about lost innocence, I suppose.

Specific songs: Sundown, Song For a Winter's Night, Carefree Highway, Don Quixote, Cotton Jenny.

A bunch more.

but to answer your question not necessarily best moment of my life, but best moment in gambling that is associated with a song and it will bringout my metrosexual side lol ............... so I'll give you an honest answer the song was 4 NonBlones - whats going on , I hit an 18k parlay the day I heard that song on the radio which it was an old song at the time, but I always loved it when I was jit growing up, I swear I put that song on cd and played everyday atleast a half-dozen times a day until I got the bad news that sportsbook.com decided they weren't gonna pay me my winnings because their a shady opperation, but after BIll Dozer did his magic they ultimately settled with me for an undisclosed amount

Mudcat, I love Gordon Lightfoot too, I had a good drinking buddy that was a priest and he listened to Gordon Lightfoot like he'd never get to play the cassette again. Song For A Winter's Night is a masterwork, it speaks of holiday spirit more than any Christmas song you'll hear this season. You'll Be Needing Me is another one of his that stands out in my mind. Thanks for reminding me to dig up that cassette again.

Me and Scholar have had our differences, but wow, how can you hate a guy who lost his virginity in the rear end and then listened to Elton John for four hours as he replayed the glorious event. That's the spirit, Mike. We can celebrate our differences without sacrificing our individuality, and I appreciate the, hopefully, kind sentiments that accompany your response. I didn't mean to gross anyone out, but when I heard that song come on the satellite radio I felt compelled to publicly acknowledge it.

I was 16 then, and still in the closet, so at the time I didn't even allow myself to process the feelings I was having. I allowed the music to do it for me, and now that I'm older I've enjoyed being able to share the story without shame or any sense of self-loathing.

In addition to my original curiousity about the music, I'm now also interested in the age ranges different people relate to the happiest period in their lives. I have a sneaking suspicion that the vast majority are before the age of 21, and that's why the save the booze for that age.

Song For A Winter's Night is a masterwork

You know, it really is. I was at a friend's house last night and his girls wanted me to play some guitar for them - so because of this thread, that was the first thing I thought of to play.

I still have a mimeograph copy (that's right, mimeograph) of the words and chords in my guitar case - in the handwriting of my teacher from 35 years ago.

It really did take a bit of effort at times to keep singing and not get choked up. It gets me from both angles. Beautiful poignant song that transports me to a beautiful time.

Mudcat, you know the B minor resolving into E Major in the chorus? I don't know what it is about that transition, maybe the old spinet that I learned it on, but playing and singing that part of the song is my favorite thing to do as a musician. I close my eyes and sing "to breathe a sigh or two" and I'm completely removed from this planet.

I know what you mean about trying to hold everything together, music and emotion are inextricably linked, and yet to be a good performer is to have discipline over the two. I wish the time machine that is good music wasn't so ephemeral...
