Drake had a big win last night, but the Bulldogs won't get past Southern Illinois in the MVC this afternoon. Play the Salukis.

This is a really tough spot for Drake. Last night the Bulldogs won in overtime to advance to the quarterfinals of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. Now, early this afternoon the Bulldogs have to turn around and face the top team in the conference. What chance do the Bulldogs have of winning today's game?

Well, four teams in the MVC finished with a winning conference record. Against those four teams the Bulldogs went winless and racked up eight losses! That said, the question becomes: Can the Salukis cover the number here? We feel very confident about that as we project a win by a double digit margin for Southern Illinois.

The Salukis held Drake to an average of 58 points in their two regular season meetings. We are well aware of the fact that the Bulldogs erupted for 101 points in last night's win. However, what does it say about the Drake defense that they made 15 of 27 three pointers last night and yet still had to go to OT to get the win?

Also note that the Bulldogs had four players that each logged at least 39 minutes. In other words, four Bulldogs essentially played a complete game last night and now must play the very next day at the noon hour! That is a tough matchup no matter who you're facing but it becomes even tougher when it's the powerful Salukis.

Look for the stifling defense of Southern Illinois to make a big difference here. This will be especially true with having the benefit of the fresher legs too! As for motivation, the Salukis won the conference tournament last season so they are the defending champs. However, they did not win the MVC in the regular season last year. Before this season the Salukis set a goal for this season of winning the MVC regular season title and conference tournament. Part one is taken care of and they get the jump start on part two this afternoon!

Jamaal Tatum, Tony Young, and Bryan Mullins are arguably the best backcourt trio in the MVC. In the frontcourt, Randal Falker and Matt Shaw combine for arguably the best tandem in the MVC. This team is loaded with experience, talent, and very well-coached with Chris Lowery, a Saluki grad, doing a fantastic job since coming on board.

I like Drake in this game. This team shot lights out last night, and I don't expect them to slow down that pace this afternoon. Even despite that grueling OT win they had last night either.
