Wrapping it up for college hoops for the year, rooting for the Heels to bring it home...maybe they can despite Roy Williams poor in-game coaching ability. Best of luck for those with futures bets still alive and for the last three games in the big dance.
FWIW here are some of the things I did to handicap
1. Pick a few teams to learn very well, especially the really bad ones. I did well fading Northern Arizona and Sacramento State, N Ariz was terrible ATS and Sac St was especially slow to start games and 1H unders were solid.
2. Look at the third best player on each team in matchups, sometimes the top players can get shut down and role players can be key
3. I did well with road favorites, this is somewhat contrarian but I felt homecourt advantage was often overvalued
4. To save time use KenPom, Sagarin and The Gold Sheet as tools to help with your ratings, I used Gold Sheet a lot and although did not always agree with their picks the write-ups were helpful
5. Be disciplined! I usually spent a couple of hours narrowing my leans down to a "best bet" or two. I feel its much easier to maintain a good winning percentage with fewer plays. Don't chase and don't play games you are not in love with
6. Don't be obsessed with line moves. Sometimes it works in your favor to get down early but I found many times when the line moved against me I still won easily, and vice-versa. I'm sure there are sharp players that can really read lines and predict moves but I can't seem to do it.
7. Use the forum to help your process, Ayo and Louisville Kid are two posters that come to mind. I did not always tail but if I liked the same side they did it usually worked out well.
8. Be disciplined!!! Money management saved my ass, had a really bad streak, like 0-8 but didn't force plays and was able to bounce back in the end. I always bet 1 unit to win whatever.
9. I don't believe in buying points but some do, go with what works
Finally, next year I'm going to plan on doing more 1H spread and totals, I think that may be a little softer than normal full game lines.
