Robber, it's the world championship for ice hockey. This tournament has a direct impact on the upcoming Olympics in Russia 2014.

This year's tournament is being held in Helsinki and Stockholm from May 4 to May 20, 2012. There are 2 groups of 8 teams that make up the rosters. Generally, there is a high percentage of NHL'ers that attend when their teams are knocked out of the playoffs.

This is different hockey than we're used to in north America. The rink is larger & there is more emphasis on speed & skill. There is good hitting, but rarely fighting.

Here's some info on the Canadian & American Teams and also a link to the host site. All games are being broadcast live here: http://www.youtube.com/icehockey

do these teams need to do well here to qualify for the olympics ? or do they getting points toward seedings for the olympics by doing well here?

            Qualification...

The proper answer should be yes... but... unfortunately, hockey fans are going to have the opportunity to witness one of the MOST EPIC 'Dick-Swinging' events in professional sport...

contract negotiation & revenue sharing agreements...

At this time there is no agreement in place between the NHL and the IIHF for full participation in the 2014 Olympics. Donald Fehr (the current NHLPA director) has stated, "If all things are equal, meaning if you can find an appropriate way to allow participation in the Olympics that works with the realities of running a business, then hopefully we’ll be able to find a way to do that."[4] Regardless, the tournament will feature 12 countries, 9 qualifying through the IIHF World Ranking, and 3 through subsequent qualifying tournaments.[3] The format will be the same as 2010, there will be three groups of 4 to determine seeding, with four rounds of elimination games. Each group winner receives a bye into the second round, along with the best second place team.

            We shall have to see...
