If you don't beleive in using past performance to predict outcomes what do you use, coin flips, maybe horiscopes of the team stick guy? Don't ever lose your day job because you don't understand handicapping or betting.

He is right to some degree...

People overvalue stats that are meaningless, like recent trends.

You have to know which stats are important and HOW important they are.

Stats like games played in the past 5 days, now that is important. Is the team playing a back to back? How long did they have to travel? Which goalie is starting, etc.

Those things you need to respect

Agreed - there is a lot to consider when placing a bet. However, knowing when to bet at -160, but not at -165 needs some pretty thorough data analysis - intuition isn't going to help you there. It isn't really different from investing, you've got to run the numbers, but past performance is not necessarily a perfect indicator of future performance.
