PStrangers NHL 2011-2012 Season Long Thread

Hello All!

Hope everyone is as excited as I am for the 2011-2012 NHL season! I have been an avid fan for the NHL, but last year only made a handful of plays. This season I'm looking to be more involved. I'll keep track of my record and see if I can beat this game.

10/6/11 Analysis:
Flyers/Bruins: Ilya Bryzgalov is going to be in the net tonight for the Flyers, the first of a long line of new additions to the team. In fact of the 20 players Philadelphia dressed for Game 4 of the conference semifinal series against the Bruins in May, 11 won't be around for this season's opener. It takes time for new teams to work as a team, and I expect this to work against the Flyers tonight. Further more, Thomas led the League in goals-against average, set a single-season NHL record save percentage and became the second goalie ever to win the Vezina Trophy, Conn Smythe Trophy and Stanley Cup in the same season. He is back in the net for the Bruins, and should be able to hold off the flyers. Pick: Bruins

Canadiens/Leafs: The Canadiens have largely the same team as they did last year, which is both good and bad. They only had 3 players that had 20 goals in 2010-11 (Plekanec, Gionta, Andrei Kostit,syn). But, they will only have to get it past Reimer, who finished the preseason with a 3.29 GAA and .880 save percentage. I expect them to exploit the weakness in the net. Further more, the Leafs are starting without several key plays, notably Nazem Kadri and Clarke MacArthur who is suspended. The leafs will have a weak offense, and be weak in the net, allowing the Canadiens to win. Pick: Canadiens

Good thing I have started playing props, they are doing quite well (3-1, +$235, 2.35 Units). Got a really juice one today. Will Shane Doan (PHO) score a goal in the game? I have a computer model for NHL games. Its a rather complicated model that 'plays' the games in advance. I put in things like SOG averages, GAA, percentage scored, etc. I weight the current season verse the last season based on how well the players are currently playing, with an emphasis on the last 5 games. I then run this simulation 100,000 times (it actually takes less than 5 mins to run the game that often). I then take the percentage of the times a team wins to calculate the EV from each play. In the case of props, I take the percentage of times that player gets a goal or a point to calculate the EV.

The model was developed before the season started, and I started using it as the basis for the majority of my plays now. Obviously, its not perfect, and it is constantly being refined. Hopefully, I can make it working and profitable as soon as possible. I will consider this project a success when my overall plays for the season have a net ROI of 5%.

I had performed a similar task for major league baseball. At the end of the regular season, my computer model returned a 5.9% ROI for the season. I did not keep a thread (thus no one has any reason to believe me), so I figured for the NHL I will keep a thread. I did find the MLB simulation a bit easier, since the pitcher controls the game. My original model for the NHL was built similarly around the goalie, but this (as one can see) was problematic. Therefore, the weight of the simulation on the goalie has been decreased, and an increase has been placed on the defensemen. However, given how variable those positions are changed, it makes the statistics much harder. I would not be surprised if I need to go through several generations before this becomes routinely profitable.

That all being said, I think the use of computer models in sports betting gives you an advantage. But I have tried a similar task for the NFL and was never able to make it profitable. I believe this to be from the fact that in the NFL one only gets 17 games, which isn't enough to get antiquate statistics. Therefore, I hope that like in the MLB were you get 162 games, that 82 games will be enough for the NHL to get antiquate statistics to make a profitable model.

I close the book on Version 2, although a small winner, I was still getting too many hits for 'good plays'.

I have performed a regression analysis on a larger set of data. Although still not as large as I would like, I was able to do a 4 parameter fit which I believe should be more accurate that the higher 6 parameter fit I used in version 2. To that end, it has been seemingly returning the odds the bookies have, which is probably a good sign. Therefore, I expect this model to be more accurate, but have less plays. So, I will start using a variable bet system.

Was still a solid pick on the under for that game. I had it as well for 1.5 units. You get unlucky from time to time and that's one of those unlucky moments where the Panthers should of closed out the game with under a minute less. I also had a unit on Florida to win so double whammy .....

A great night! Even with a terrible 3 unit bet on the Blue Jackets, I still went 5-2 for +$340. I actually made a $100 bet on the Sharks live at +350, so it was even a better night.
