Will Edmonton win a cup in the next five years?
I put up $1000 that it wouldn't happen.

Quick back story - I made my bet with my buddy from Edmonton. Normally I wouldn't want anything to do with a five year bet, cause hell, I don't even talk to most of my friends from five years ago, who knows where another five will go? But this guy's classy, one of the few people I would actually trust with a bet like this, so it's on.

Now I'm not stupid enough to think that it COULDN'T happen, but I feel damn good about my chances. What do you think?

If this is a straight 1:1 bet then you raped him in it.

Without even analyzing anything remotely related to hockey, no team in the league is 1:1 to win the cup in the next 5 years. Not Vancouver, not Pittsburgh, not Washington, SJ, etc...

Pittsburgh good example. 03-04 last in league, 05-06 2nd last in league, 08-09 Stanley Cup champs. Could happen. They do need a goalie who can stay healthy though...

You should be good with the bet. As much as I like Edmonton, there's no chance in hell they would even come any close to the Cup in the next decade. Unless they spend horrendous amounts of money on new players and basically build a new team. For if the young guys on the current roster "grow" and become any good, Edmonton will most probably sell them anyway. But anything can happen in sports. GL!

Very doubtful, they will get better (if things are done correctly) but its gonna take a bit longer to get to cup winning level.

            It is.

I think the Penguins example definitely played into the other better's mentality. That plus an obvious hometown bias. Chicago did the same thing really, they were absolute shit five years ago. But realistically I don't think the rags to riches story happens nearly as much as people think it does.

I have a lot of family in Ottawa, and I keep thinking they're a similar example to Edmonton. They were dead last in the league around 2000 / 2001 (not sure exact date), but they rebuilt, and had a couple great seasons. Alfreddson, Spezza, Fisher, Hossa, Chara, Heatley .. everyone I talked to in Ottawa was expecting a cup. But in the end they never even made it to the finals.

Had to take the bet .. just too many strong teams in the salary cap era to be that sure about any one.

Unfortunately for EDM, Hall, RNH, Paajarvi and Eberle aren't Crosby, Malkin, Fleury and Staal.

However, I like how they've set up for the future, similar to how the Pens and Hawks rebuilt.

As a Leafs' fan, I'm very envious. Burke had the chance to go the scorched-earth route and draft some stars but he was in a hurry and preferred to improve with trades and free agents. Although the roster looks much improved on paper this year, it looks like another decade of mediocrity thanks to Burkie's arrogance.

For the OP, your bet is easily hedged. The Oil won't be less than 10-1 to win the Cup in futures to begin the season the next 5 years and much higher the next two.

Your friend is a dumbass for offering you 1-1 odds Free $1000 for you. And as others have said very easy to hedge if the Oilers make the cup finals.

Statistically you made a good bet, but theres something about the OILERS. I wouldn't worry too much, but honestly years 4 and 5 are gonna be nailbiters for you in the playoffs, the OILERS rebuiling just like the Hawks and Pens. They have all the skill up front, its just that there D is severely lacking. Goaltending shouldn't be a huge deal as CHI did win with a rookie goalie and Dubnyk is improving. Odds are clearly in your favor but you never know.

Didnt they make it to the finals like 10 years ago, finishing 8th and not having a good team but amazing goaltending behind Roloson?
Anyone who follows hockey knows that how you play down the stretch and how good your goalie is goes a long way. You dont have to always have the most talented team.....

This team will be very good in 2 years. Loads of young skill and Hall may be a monster in two years. Team should be very good within 2 years. A cup is possible in year 4 or 5.

Half their team is under 23... 2 first overall picks...

I'm not saying they'll win... but surely only an idiot would bet a grand they wouldn't...

Ottawa did make the finals in 2006-2007 only to lose to the ducks in 5 games

There is great value on your bet , however the oilers will make a few good playoff runs in the next 5 years and you might have to sweat this one out.

Don't worry too much, you will be able to hedge to at least lessen the blow if they get close. I just booked them to win the West at 20-1 odds.
