Yeah, Christ I just came across that as well. One article link: http://www.thecheapseats.ca/2011/08/...ound-dead.html I have no idea what the deal is beyond the basics but I feel it's quite sad at the least and strangely suspicious at the most that three have passed away so recently. Seemed like a good enough guy.

It's not the roids, it's that you're now seeing the first crop of players who have played through this pharmaceutical era. Yes, injuries are down, but guys are playing on injuries that modern medicine has them not feeling. Injuries that in the past would have got them a week off, or a normal 5 week injury that they are playing on in 2. Suicides and accidental overdoses are going to spike over the next five years. I'm not really counting Cavanagh's due to mental illness.

It's a mix of a bunch of factors.
                      Stress+pain killers+Roids+alcool and drugs+head injuries.

All of those can trigger depression and/or other mental illness

Been a tough few months for NHL players...

What the hell is going on?

NHL needs to have better counselling or something for players. These guys taking their lives, its meaningless...

                        Tragic.

Truly unreal that a married man with a wife and two young kids would choose to end his life. Perhaps he was just too depressed from not being signed anywhere and not having a whole lot of meaning as hockey was all he knew.

                          Brutal offseason for the NHL

Not getting signed is probably one of the hardest things for an NHL player but he still could have played ECHL. Definitely a down grade but it would be an easier transition from the big times to full on retirement.

His Mom said publicly today that Wade was suffering from depression but she thought he had come to grips with it.

Yes, its really a combination of all things. We are learning more and more about the effects of head injuries and it is not good. You've also got stress from the diminished role of the enforcer. Hockey has a very dark side to it when it comes to drinking and drugs (both recreational and steroids), the testing policy is a joke. Hockey may have its own steroid scandal in a few years.
