    NHL Handicapping Program
Hey guys I have been working on a program to help me compare team stats when looking at NHL plays. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what other stats are useful to look at, I can write stored procedures to get just about anything. Thanks

are you trying to write your own handicapping software? i can give you some suggestions if you wouldn't mind clarifying what exactly you mean by "useful"

Anything that would help when comparing 2 teams/trying to predict the outcome of the game. I am pretty new to this but find it interesting. These are just stats that I look at before making bets on hockey games, I made the program to make it easier for me to compare and calculate. Whatever suggestions you may have I am happy to hear.

Oh okay, that's what I thought. Here are a few suggestions:
-Power Ratings; home, away, and overall
        -Offense; home, away, overall
        -Defense; home, away, overall
        -ROI; favourite, underdog
        -ATS; favourite, underdog
        -Power play percentage
        -Penalty killing percentage
        -Plus/minus

Not sure if you are aware Willy, but there is hockey handicapping software available. PDS sports has an excellent one. Not only does it give you the historical records of every game since 1996 but will also give you its own "best plays". It also calculates all of the things I just mentioned for both the season, and any point in time. For example, I know the Devils had a record of 9-17-1 on the road coming into tonights game against the leafs, but I would like to know how they've performed since january 1st. It takes one click of the mouse. The company sends out updates for the software every morning as the lines are released. It is a very cheap $60 I believe.
Anyways, just wanted to give you the heads up about the software...it is the best I have seen.
If you any more questions regarding hockey dont hesitate to message me. BEST OF LUCK!

One more thing, team vs team historical records only matter in RECENT history. I cannot emphasize this enough. I shuddered tonight when I read that some guy was going to pick Philly because they were 14-2 against the Canes going back to 2006. DOESNT MATTER! There are very few trends that I take heed to in hockey.

How about how their record is coming off a win/loss, record on how many days rest, record in overtime/regulation (say Detroit is a big fav, but poor in OT, take them in regulation), Plus/Minus of teams taking into account their injuries. If you want to make live bets as well, take a look at % when leading after 1 or 2, or trailing after 1 or 2. If I can think of some others, I'll add them.

Locke, you mentioned pdsports software. I tried contacting about a trial version and there is none. You pay $80 and get 1 screenshot to decide if it will do what you want and no refunds...lol.

haha no, i know what you mean. seems like a complete scam. i called the owner of the company prior. he is a legit guy and has been nothing but helpful since. i actually suggested that he make the website a little more professional. he gave me a $10 discount simply because i called. i feel kinda like im trying to sell it myself right now, which im not. but to be honest i havent had any complaints. i could probably send you some more screen shots if you actually are interested.

the handicap feature is "nice" but it doesnt make my picks for me. (the software is up on the year though) i use it for number crunching which its difficult to find time for. every morning i get updates for the software with the days lines, in case you were wondering
