Ottawa Senators vs. Tampa Bay Lightning // Feb 2

    Buckle up the chin straps

The Tampa Bay Lightning (22-3-6) host the Ottawa Senators (26-16-6) in an all-Eastern Conference clash tonight. The two teams are in very different places as we round into the latter half of the NHL season.

    Attack from the North

The Sens are holding onto second place in the Atlantic Division. With the Boston Bruins tied with them with 58 points and the Montreal Canadiens way out in front in first with 67, this seems to be the best case scenario Ottawa this season. But it won’t be an easy position to hold. Along with Boston, the Toronto Maple Leafs (55 points) and the Florida Panthers (54 points) are nipping at their heels in the Atlantic.

Coming off a loss on their first game back from the All-Star break, the Sens are 6-2-2 in their last 10 games. Going on the road hasn’t been a daunting task for the team as their away record sits at comfortable 12-9. With the addition of giving up six goals in their last game, the Sens team will fight with a little more motivation tonight. It is the first time their head coach Guy Boucher returns to Tampa—the organization he broke into the NHL with.

    Bolts from above

Since the get-go it has been a frustrating season for the Lightning. What’s more annoying for the squad is that everyone knows it. Having just endured two deep playoff runs, the team was riddled with injuries right out of the gate and hasn’t played up to its usual standard.

The Lighting are 3-5-2 in their last 10 games but have had better fortune at home where they are 12-9-2 on the season. Like the Sens, the Lightning are also looking for their first win since coming back from the All-star break. They sit 14th in the Eastern Conference and despite all their challenges this season, they sit only six points back from the final Wild Card Spot.

    The Final Breakdown

When both teams are starving for a win, give the edge to the home team. The Lightning need a big win on home ice, simple as that. If you haven't been to the Tampa Bay forum, trust me. Do it. Their fans are loud and the atmosphere is electric.... Excuse the pun.
