What are some possible approaches in modeling International Association Tournaments such as World Championships in team sports (soccer, handball, ice hockey etc.)? I find it difficult to build a model since the data sample is super small. The tournament can be halfway or more than halfway through when 4 games have been played (the input data needed), and they might only be held every 2 years. I understand using SOS as a parameter will be very important because of the different oppositions in the "round robin" games. Any ideas?
