java will work but i don't think it's really the best option. if you're just learning php is really basic and you can make tons of mistakes and the program will still run
it has built in xml parser in simplexml and there's a lot of resources for screen scraping
plus if you want to learn sql you can install php myadmin, use their interface to generate queries you want and phpmyadmin will write the code for you that you can place in your script
tho sql is pretty basic you only need to know a couple concepts and should pick them up easy
prolly the hardest thing is database layout. takes a lot of planning and you'll prolly adjust it a couple times until you end up with something you are happy withComment
