But unfortunately in some leagues such as the NFL, the rules and coaching factors relating to this change so frequently (yearly now) as to make earlier years fairly worthless. I have line data and boxscores from the 70's (my NFL data set goes back to 1970) and the predictive value related to today is not worthwhile.

Pro football in the 70's, hmmm. Didn't the defense used to have huddles on every play, with some defenses actually holding hands in the huddle? Whatever happened to them days anyways?
