I love the Sagarin Ratings for football and basketball, but only use them as a point of reference for baseball. You can use them to compare starters, but you don't get a lot of information on matchups.

Personally, I don't have a formula. I look at split stats regarding specific matchups. I like to know how a starter has done in his career against the opponent with close attention given to the last three starts. It's an inexact science for me, but I do alright with it.

You might try this formula: ((IP+K-H-BB)/Gm's)*10
I import stats into a spreadsheet and it's updated daily using the stated formula. If you aren't comfortable with it you may try here: http://www.thelogicalapproach.com/da...eport_2010.htm
Iskoe has a daily pitcher report and his figures are very similar to the ones in the above formula. He usuall posts around 9 am Pacific Time. His ratings don't come into effect until a pitcher reaches a certain milestone. I can't remember his exact criteria, but it has to do with a minimum number of innings pitched.
Good Luck with your action..

Sorry for the delay replying.....golf course called.
This is Iskoe's site.http://www.thelogicalapproach.com/da...eport_2010.htm I reference his site, but I don't use his numbers per se. The formula I mentioned up above is what I use, but his figures and the ones derived from the formula a very close.

Sagarin ratings are OK. Massey tells you how he builds his formulas and he has history. Both give you a "neutral" look at a teams capability and are similar to each other. Having met Sagarin and realizing what a prick he is sort of puts you off, tho.
A one time he hated the gambling community; when I told him that it is a little like biting the hand that feeds you he really got testy. Dude didn't have a job, hung around the house watching reruns of Captain Kangaroo and Gilligans Island occasionally getting on the computer to make a few runs, submit his ratings to USA Today, and then go back to couch-mushroom mode.

Not even at couch tuber mode; his ass is in fungi mode still.

Don't he and Wanyne Winston work together for the Mavericks? How much do you suppose USA today pays him? and while we are on USA Today, how much do you suppose they pay that idiot Sherridan to provide them with a line?

Not to sound like a tool, but Sagarin's ratings are very vanilla. They're actually as good (go to prediction tracker, iirc) as any other public ratings (except Kenpom for CBB, I think), but they still aren't going to beat the books.
In fact, you need to think about how to beat Sagarin.
And fwiw, you should be able to produce something very close to Sagarin using Excel's solver. In fact, I'd say level one in modeling is producing something equal to Sagarin on your own. Then, beat that.
