I would look at three things. The numbers (for instance, see Justin's NFL 2009 thread with spreadsheet); the motivation, dating back to last season; and the team culture (coaching).

The team culture is like the tires. You want to have the right pressure, and no leaks. The motivation is like the engine. And the numbers reflect the type of car; Bentley, Beamer, or Kia.

One other thing to think about, as well, is that if you make a weekly power ranking, you're not ranking the teams 1-30 as the best to worst over the course of the season. The power rankings should reflect the teams that are playing their best at the time the rankings are made, and the teams that are playing the worst. If it was just a ranking of the best to worst teams it would be pretty boring. That's my opinion, at least.

Try reading Dan Gordons beat the sportsbooks. It gives you a good starting system to use, then incorporate some of your own philosophies. There is also software available to go with the book. Good book to form basic power ratings.

Dan Gordon's book is CRAP. Straight out of the 80s, but using letter rankings.

            Is that you Dan?
