I usually don't post picks ths early in the week, but I usually don't have a "Best Bet" kicking off on Tuesday evening either. I'll post my Tuesday pick with writeup, and add to as the week progresses.
Florida Atlantic (ML) @ Middle Tennessee State (Best Bet)
FAU beat MTSU last year by 2 touchdowns and went on to win the Sun Belt Conference championship, and they had to beat Troy (at Troy) to do it.
This year, FAU has almost their entire team coming back from that championship team including QB Rusty Smith. Also, Howard Schellenberger, IMHO, is the best coach in the conference.
Coming into this game, FAU has played a brutal schedule having played @ Texas, @ Michigan State and @ Minnesota. Of course they lost all three, but they did cover the number against Michigan St.
The toughest games MTSU has played is MD on their home turf (an impressive win for a Sun Belt team) and @ Kentucky (which they almost pulled out with a miracle hail mary). They covered the spread in both games. But MTSU's other two games were versus Troy (they lost by 2 touchdowns), and @ Arky State where they lost by 17. On both occasions they fail to cover the number by almost 10 points.
My main concern in this game is that this will be FAU's 3rd consecutive road game, and I usually like to fade teams in this situation. Other than that, the fact that the game is on the road game is not a big concern for me. This game is also suppose to be a blackout (gee where have we heard that before), but fans choice in haberdashery won't keep the best team from winning this game.
Last year, aside from beating MTSU by 2 TDs, on the last game of the regular season FAU had to travel to Troy, Alabama as 15-point underdogs, with the Sun Belt Conference championship hanging in the balance. They left town with a 38-32 victory and a conference championship (NOTE: Troy was really good last year). They went on to impressively defeat Memphis in the Liberty Bowl 44-27.
FAU is the better team with the better coach and the better QB, and they're getting points. Don't make a mistake here. Schnellinberger will have his boys ready to play in this conference opener, and they'll win it by 2 touchdowns. FAU easy!!!
FAU 34 MTSU 20
BOL All!!!
FREAK OUT!!!
