When to get ready for the season?
I've been debating on when to get my power ratings models for all the teams ready. My first thought was early July but now I'm thinking late July/early August would be better. Anybody have an opinion?

I'm in process of updating my db now; once finished will immediately calc ratings.

This should have already been done. NCAA "games of the year" wagering is already out there, and any gambler who knows how to win is on the games he/she thinks have bad lines.

Being that I only handicap football, I start creating my numbers in May and continue to update them all summer long as I continue more and more research.

That is the way to do it. I also only handicap football, mostly college football.

Evaluation of teams takes place all year as "relevant" information is gathered. Much of what we read and hear is just "noise" and one needs to become adept at filtering out these things that will have no bearing on the relative strength of each team. Many coaches don't even know what they have until some actual game experience, so I just try to do my best at adjusting each year.

If you're not into futures or early lines, which I am not, there is no need to prepare too early. I like to start getting serious about now and do all the things necessary for the football season which is a considerable amount of work. By mid August I like to be up to speed and be prepared to get into a "rhythm" so to speak. It's like getting pumped for the big game in your playing days....don't want to get up too early.

All of these predictions about what will take place in November and December are fun and gives a football fan something to do in the off season, but obviously most will be wrong as always. There are so many different dynamics at play during the season. Even week to week matchups are extremely difficult to predict and most of us are well aware of that.

Now that I'm into my routine I do find myself looking forward to my Saturdays of college football. In the meantime, I'll just have to be content making a few bucks off of the bandits that I play golf with.

If you only do one sport, then I guess you can never be too early. I have two summer sports going on.

The other things to consider is the money management, information arrival, and line softening due to the later arrival of softer money. For MM, tying money up early is usually never a good idea given other opportunities; then adding in the information arrival, this also tends to push you away from early staking. I know the topic of line softening during the week before the game is controversial, but I contend it is real.

I start getting my prelimary numbers ready---- returning OL starts, returning, yards, returning starters on both sides, QB play-----and then make a final computation in August.

The reason I wait is because of transfers, injuries, and dismissals.

Two examples already----Russell Wilson transferring to Wisconsin where he is immediately eligible, and North Texas losing almost 40% of its returning offense from arrests.

                            Those happened in June.

Do you guys find that the best stats/info come in the form of magazines (which ones) or just simply research on the internet. I have yet to really get into college sports gambling, as I'm more of a mlb nfl guy. Would love to get into college sports, just seems so overwhelming.

Yes, i.e. you need data from BOTH magazine and internet sources. It's not so hard if you love working data sets. I have a db that covers over 70,000 games going back to 1960 gotten from a set of football betting magazines that go back to 1972.

college isnt bad, just remember teams typically play very similar under one coach no matter what year. Of course crazy things happen, but for the most part, its a great philosophy to handicap by
