and that is it. I am not going to get into an all out argument about the type of program he ran, the type of man he is, etc etc etc.
What I am going to do is point out some fact and lace it with my opinion, and you all can do what you want with it. The people that have hated OSU for having one of the longest runs in Big Ten History of domination are still going to come on here and trash him, while the OSU butt suckers are still going to kiss his ass and say he didnt deserve all of this.
I am a Notre Dame fan, so I have no dog in the fight, but I did work closely at a university with people who knew JT, and I have met him JT, but I cannot say it was long enough to say for sure what kind of man he was. I can only give you the impressions I got from the people I talked to, and the short time I spoke with him.
These are the things I CAN tell you.
1) College Football is a lot worse off today for having fired someone like JT. If you read the emails, he actually cared about his players. He obviously was not happy that the items were sold, and he tried to contact people that he thought would straighten our the players...people that had influence over the players. He did keep this to himself, but I am still trying to figure out how you all suddenly make him out to be a "fraud" and cheater. Exactl what did he do that gave him a competitive advantage other than let his players play??
If had a son that wanted to play FB somewhere 3 hours away and that needed a father figure because I would not be there to watch out for that child, Jim Tressel is exactly the kind of person I would want as that rolemodel. He got info that his players were involved with some bad people, and he went to the people he felt had the most influence on the players to try to get it taken care of....while not endangering those players....
2) Graduation and eligibility rates have only risen since JT has been coach at OSU. I am not sure when - but at some point it became more important to the media, and the NCAA that kids not sell their own belongings than whether a coach is doing the right thing as far as being a mentor, and helping the kids grow. The haters can say that OSU cheated all they want, but the fact is - OSU got NO competitive advantage by what happened.
3) Jim Tressel lied. Brent Musburger said it best today when he said, " I bet most people would have done the same thing that Tressel did (lying) when they found out about the situation, but the cover up (lying in December about having knowledge) is where the real problem came in."
I understand the Michigan people that come on here, and the PSU fans that come on here and have all this hate built up for Tressel. I mean, he has been kicking their asses for years....of course they are going to do anything to make themselves feel better about their program vs OSU.
Nevermind the fact that PSU was 5th in the nation for arrests last year (and everyone claims JO PA is the most wondeful man in america) or that Michigan Did something that should have given them a MUCH bigger advantage on the field - practicing extra hours...
I understand why those schools want to spew their hate. The people I dont get are the people who knew nothing of JT, know nothing about his chartity, the type of person he is, the ways he gave back to the university, and how he tried to make each kid a better person before they left OSU.
He lied....something most of you do every day....get over it people.....
I grew up a ND fan, but have always had respect for OSU...it's ridiculous that someone who actually cared about his players getting grades, and becoming a better person was (basically) fired over this incident.
