And Southern Miss was quietly the second best team in the State of Mississippi.


Both of these coaches served Urban Meyer at Florida, so they are very familiar with each others systems

southern miss has not played competition like louisville not saying they r great but dont let the records fool anybody... louisville is at least half tested!! southern miss allows an avg almost 30 pts per game but they r a high scoring team..louisville depends a lot on rush offense there defense is legit on allowing avg of 18pts per game... this one is tuff i could see it going either way...

Southern Miss hasn't really had a "bad" loss.

They lost 2 1-point games, and dropped another by 6. They are 8 points away from being 11-1.

Louisville though has been solid. They are dramatically improved----and they may have lost 6 games, but only Pitt beat them soundly.

This is a tough game to cap. Lots of variables.

1st bowl game for Louisville in 4 years. Theyve been all over the charts the last couple of seasons: Petrino has been a good coach for them from 2004-2006 with a 32-5 record and were 27-12 ATS. In 2004 L'ville was ranked 9th in the nation in total O and 3rd in scoring O...in 2006 they were 2nd in total O and 4th in scoring O...but after Petrino left and Kragthorpe signed on, they posted a record of 13-21 and wrapped up the 2009 season 91st and 111th in total and scoring O. Bring on Charlie Strong and his Defensive coaching: the L'ville D held all but 2 opponents to less than 20 points - including a 26-0 shutout of UConn. QB Burke and RB Powell - who has a 6.3yards per carry average - can move the ball well.

Southern Miss is entering their 9th straight bowl game and 13 in the last 14 years. They posted 45ppg in the last 8 games - and lost 3 of them 44-73, 50-49 in overtime and 56-50. QB Davis had a good season with 60% pass completion, almost 2,900 yards in the air and an 18/6 TD to INT ratio. Souther Miss also touts the nations 13th best rushing D.

At the end of the day, Southern Miss has history and experience on their side, but only barely. Im probably gonna pass on this one - or maybe a small play - but I came out with a 31-24 Southern Mississippi victory.

This is a very tough game to call. I think louisville will be too much for Southern Miss. The quality teams they have played against and the fact that their stingy defense doesn't give up that much. Louisville has a solid run attack and a lot of people are betting Southern Miss based on record. Its bowl season records don't matter anymore.

This is a literal coin toss for me.

The only sure bet is the over.

Southern Miss just gives up too many points. Over 50 to Tulsa several weeks back.

Although S Miss looked very impressive against UCF I have to go with Louisville....S Miss just gives up too many points.

Im leaning torwards the cards tonight. Louisville's runningback is one of the top 10 running backs in the nation his vision and decision making is great i expect him to have a great game and expect him to be too much for southern miss's defense and open up the pass game for louisville i think they win by double digits.

I am hearing a lot about Louisville's defense and how Southern Miss doesnt play anyone. A closer look at the numbers say that Louisville has only one win against teams with a total offense ranked better than 95th (Arkansas St. 43rd). Other wins came against Eastern Kentucky (FCS), Memphis (117th Total O), UCONN (96th Total O), Syracuse (106th Total O) and Rutgers (114th Total O).

Southern Miss is the flipside in that they have played a lot of bad defenses with the one exception coming against UCF in a 31-21 win. UCF ranks 12th in scoring D and 18th in total D. Other opponents like ECU, La Tech, Memphis, Tulsa, Houston and Kansas all rank 99 or worst in total D.

This will be a contrast of styles in that Louisville doesnt have the offense that So. Miss has been accustomed to seeing in CUSA but they put a better defense on the field than most of their opponents. It is probably best to leave this game alone since there are a lot of unkowns but if I had to go with a side I would take the points and Southern Miss. I think they can win this game straight up 34-31.
