    New Mexico Bowl Write-Up
    Good luck everyone!

Game 3 New Orleans Bowl Troy – Ohio U 12/18

Troy had an off year but did back into a tie in the conference. FIU got the tiebreaker edge, but Troy had the highest Power #, although that # was 7 below their past 2 years. Ohio U. seeks its first bowl win. They had a solid, but also unspectacular year as a late upset loss cost them a shot at the MAC title game. This game appears like a good match-up for both.

Troy Analysis: Troy allowed 31 points per game, and 44 vs. 4 bowl teams. They are primarily a pass type although they have a pair of very good RB’s. The QB threw 24 TD’s but also added 15 interceptions. All purpose player Jernigan can run, catch, and do it all on special teams. He is the top offensive threat in the game. Troy has an acceptable pass D but a 4.5/171 run D. The PK was 15-20.

Ohio U. Analysis: Ohio allowed 22 per game, and 25 vs. bowl teams. The overall run O was decent at 4.4/169 but this Bobcat unit lacks a true RB stud. QB Jackson runs hot and cold. His interception rate is even higher than Troy’s QB. Ohio has the better (by far) run D, but the pass D% is slightly worse. Ohio has a good long distance PK and has strong special teams defense, which means the battle lines are drawn with Jernigan on the return game. Troy is the better sacking team but Ohio has protected better thus far. The WR’s are average.

Other stats, trends and game keys: Ohio is the rush and point stat play which is mildly important. Troy is closer to New Orleans and has played there twice before. Which QB will throw > interceptions? Who will win the battle of special teams when Jernigan is on the field? Other Troy keys are stopping Ohio’s run and using what is likely more talented offensive athletes to their advantage. Other Ohio keys are proving that their better defensive point and run D stats are legit, and hoping QB Jackson plays big.

Pick: The Troy +’s are Jernigan, site of game, the better pass scheme and their ability to sack. Ohio +'s include their the run edge, the motivation to win a bowl game and their point D. This is not Troy’s best team, and the early feeling is that the Sun Belt was down a bit in ’10. Ohio has a chance to take pressure off their QB with the run game and that is where we will go with this pick. 1.5*** Ohio. Ohio U wins 27-24.
