#2I dont know why he would go to Michigan. He has an opportunity to win a national championship at Stanford with Luck and company. Why take a step back and go rebuild at Michigan? Because he went there? If he didn't get Michigan to a BCS game within 3 years, he would probably get canned.Comment -

#7It is a lot tougher to recruit at Stanford than it is at Michigan.
Win at Stanford----and what? The draw 25K fans per game. They sold out 3 games this year with a 10-1 team.
Win at Michigan---and he is coaching god on campus.
No brainer.Comment -

#8Ive been saying since August I would love for him to come to Jacksonville and bring Luck with him. Now it seems JDR is doing an ok job of staying mediocre which means Weaver wont give him or Garrard the boot.Comment -

#9Luck will go to the pros next season. Michigan will keep Rich Rod for another year. Harbaugh? If he goes anyplace, it will be to the pros.Comment -

#10The allure of coaching where you went to school is very strong for some...
I think Stanford is a good job. And for some, it might even be a destination job. But I don't think Harbaugh is that guy.
Could easily see him being swayed to restore the glory to the Maize and Blue...or heading to the NFL.

#13The Michigan job will open if Harbaugh wants it. You know they have put feelers out to the Harbaugh camp by now and if he tells them he wants it, the job is his. Otherwise they will stick to Rich Rod another year.
Who knows what he is thinking long term? I won't pretend to, but I'll be stunned if he is at Stanford in 3 years, and I think it's 50/50 for next year. Michigan or the NFL.Comment -

#15Stanford doesn't support their team with the attendance or the willingness to pay their head coach a competitive wage. They are, and will continue to be, simply a stepping-stone for any top notch coach.Comment -

#17Unlike his brother Jon who coaches the Ravens, Jim isn't the kind of guy who can tolerate coddling professionals. Not to mention he'd have to consider the possibility of a lockout next year (the owners are saving up for the possibility of a lockout that could last as long as two seasons). As for whether he'd leave Stanford: that's a no brainer. Stanford didn't break 40k in attendance for their win vs. Oregon State to end the season. Think about that, not even 40 thousand to watch the best Stanford QB since John Elway lead his team to a THIRD shutout win of the season in his last game before being the #1 overall pick in the draft.
Harbaugh wants to be in the Big Ten. Next year with the addition of Nebraska the Big Ten could be right up there with the SEC in terms of balance and depth. Compare that to a conference that is stuck in FSN purgatory where 7 of its 10 teams aren't bowl eligible and you have to deal with Oregon's onslaught of Legarete Blounts and Jeremiah Mesolis and Nike money. There's a reason Harbaugh asked to be considered for the Michigan State job back when they fired John L Smith.
There isnt' a single reason Michigan shouldn't make this move. Its not even about whether Rodriguez is good enough anymore, its about the fact that there is someone indisputably better. 11-1, #1 pro-style QB, wins over USC. Heck, you can make the case that Harbaugh has already accomplished more than Rodriguez has not only at Michigan, but even at West Virginia! I mean, what did he do there other than blow a shot at the national title by losing 13-9 to a 4-7 Pitt team at home and needing a fake punt to avoid blowing a 3 TD lead to Georgia in the Sugar Bowl?
The only way Rodriguez comes back is if Harbaugh doesn't want the job. Then he gets maybe 1 more year to fix that defense before they bring in Hoke from San Diego State who used to be an assistant for Lloyd Carr. There's a good chance we'll find out more after this Thursday when Harbaugh is going to be honored at the Michigan Football end of season banquet.Comment -

#24You don't think he'd take the Michigan job because it would require rebuilding? Do you know how much rebuilding he had to do at Stanford? Do you know how much rebuilding he had to do at Univ. San Diego which didn't even give out athletic scholarships?
But I do think you make an excellent point about one thing: Michigan will be rebuilding next year, especially on defense. That shatters the argument made by every Rodriguez backer that if we fired him we'd have to tolerate more rebuilding. The way Rodriguez has mismanaged that defense, WE'RE GOING TO BE REBUILDING WITH OR WITHOUT RODRIGUEZ. The only question is will we rebuild with a man who can actually do some building?Comment -
