Running through the numbers with what I have seen this season and the best bet for tonight's Toledo-Northern Illinois game is not going to be available.....until halftime.
The best bet for tonight's game will come on the second half lines for the game. In the last five weeks, Toledo has given up 31 points in the second half (21 of those to Boise State) and Northern Illinois has surrendered 24 points in the last six weeks.
The ONLY thing that should scare you is the offense for each team in the back half. Toledo has put up 90 points in the second half of their last five games and NIU has 112 points in the third and fourth quarters of the last six.
Why do I pick the defensive side of this play? In Toledo's last five, it began the third quarter having been behind by a combined score of 98-46. The Rockets needed to explode to get back into these games. Three of the five games saw Toledo begin the second half down by two or more touchdowns. Northern on the other hand, outscored its opponents 106-72 in the first half over the same stretch.
My belief is that NIU racked up its points in the second half against teams that were significantly weaker (as evidenced by only one top 125 Sagarin performer--Temple--was in the group). Toledo's group had three teams inside the top 125 (four in the last six weeks).
How will it play out? Two solid rushing teams, two teams that can stop the rush and two teams that each control the ball for more than 30 minutes per game.
I will go with the UNDER in the SECOND HALF. Wish I could lay out a number--but I am guessing it will be 24.....
