#69The Sports Network
DATE & TIME: Friday, September 17th, 10:00 p.m. (et)
FACTS & STATS: Site: Mackay Stadium (29,993) -- Reno, Nevada. Television: ESPN2. Home Record: California 2-0, Nevada 2-0. Away Record: California 0-0, Nevada 0-0. Neutral Record: California 0-0, Nevada 0-0. Conference Record: California 0-0, Nevada 0-0. Series Record: California leads, 22-1-1.
GAME NOTES: California will look to continue its dominance over the Wolf Pack when the Golden Bears invade Mackay Stadium to take on Nevada this Friday.
The Golden Bears have won 22 of the 24 meetings against Nevada, with one of the other two matchups finishing in a tie. Cal has only lost to the Wolf Pack once, and comes into this matchup with a 12-game winning streak against Nevada.
California has stormed out of the gates in the 2010 season, as coach Jeff Tedford's team opened the year with a 52-3 win over UC Davis. The Golden Bears followed that victory with another convincing performance, as they punished Colorado, 52-7.
The Wolf Pack also head into this matchup with a 2-0 ledger. In fact, it is the first time Nevada has begun a season with two straight wins since 1995. The 2010 campaign kicked off with a thrilling, 49-24 victory over Eastern Washington, and that was followed by a 51-6 decision over Colorado State.
It is safe to say that everything is working for coach Tedford's offense so far. The Golden Bears have scored 52 points in each of their first two games, and possess a very balanced attack.
This past weekend the Golden Bears were led by Kevin Riley, who threw for 197 yards and four touchdowns. So far, the senior signal caller has been on the mark, completing 65.9 percent of his throws, while tossing seven touchdowns and no interceptions.
Keenan Allen and Marvin Jones have similar numbers through two games, as both players have nine receptions and two scores, while Allen has 177 yards, compared to Jones' 167 yards.
While the Golden Bears have shown great success through the air, this offense's bread and butter is still the ground game, which possesses one of the most dangerous tailbacks in the nation in Shane Vereen. However, because Cal has clobbered its first two opponents, the shifty back has not seen a ton of action. For example, against Colorado, Vereen totaled just 16 carries, but still finished the game with 59 yards and one score.
While the offense is scoring left and right, the defense for Cal has been down right stingy. Against the Buffaloes, the Golden Bears allowed just 241 total yards, and stymied Colorado's rushing attack, surrendering just 75 yards on 1.8 yards per attempt. It was the second strong showing for this defense against the run. After two games the Golden Bears have allowed just 89 yards on the ground.
The Golden Bears still managed to dominate the Aggies in the opener, despite making many big plays. However, that was not the case in the win over Colorado, as the Golden Bears collected five turnovers, and six sacks in the win. Two of those takeaways went for scores, as Mike Mohamed returned an interception 41 yards to paydirt, while Darian Hagan picked up a fumbled and proceeded to run 82 yards for a score.
The Golden Bears have a few weapons offensively that can cause trouble for opposing teams, but the Wolf Pack have only one threat and that is quarterback Colin Kaepernick.
Kaepernick was one of the top signal callers in the nation a year ago, and he is off to another fast start in 2010. After opening the season with four touchdowns against Eastern Washington, the signal caller for coach Chris Ault's club was even better against Colorado State.
In the win over the Rams, Kaepernick rushed for 161 yards and two touchdowns, while Vai Taua added 118 yards and one score. The two players helped lead Nevada to a whopping 376 rushing yards on an equally impressive 8.2 yards per attempt.
However, Kaepernick was not done there, as the veteran gunslinger also had success through the air. The quarterback for Nevada completed 21-of-29 passes in the win, and finished with 241 yards and two touchdowns. Clearly this offense is based around Kaepernick, and the quarterback will need to stay at this level for Nevada to remain in the win column.
Kaepernick and his offensive crew gets most of the attention in Reno, but the performance by the defense early in the season can not go overlooked. After allowing 24 points to Eastern Washington, the defense for coach Ault was more determined against Colorado State and it showed as the team held the Rams to just six points.
After allowing Eastern Washington to rumble for 162 yards, the Wolf Pack buckled down against the run in the win over CSU, as the defense held the Rams to just 78 yards on 2.5 yards per attempt. Nevada only came away with one turnover in the win, but finished with five sacks and held the Rams to just 4- of-14 on third down attempts.
Cal and Nevada have opened the new year scorching hot, but one team will end up in the loss column after tonight's matchup. Nevada might be home this evening, but the Golden Bears have more weapons, and more talent on both ends of the field and should be able to grab a victory on the road.
