Auburn travels down to Cow Bell Town tonite to play Miss. State. The line is anywheres from Auburn -1 to -2.5. Auburn's offense basically had it's way with a very weak Arkansas State team in their 52-26 win. New QB Cameron Newton had a very successful debut for the Tigers. The defense was a bit disappointing.
Miss. State had an equally impressive 49-7 win over hapless Memphis last week. Their new starters (and there are many) played very well. The defense was fine.
Auburn is considered a possible player in the SEC West. Even Herbie picked them to win the SEC West. I know, it's Herbie, but it is mildly interesting. Miss. State was expected to have a better year than last year's 5 win effort, and is expected to qualify for a bowl game. The Big difference is the fact that one team is expected to be a challenger for the SEC West title, and the other is not.
If Auburn has any hope of challenging Alabama, Arkansas, and LSU for the title, they can not afford to lose a game against the likes of Miss. State. If they can not defeat State on the road, what is going to happen when they go to Tuscaloosa? What is going to happen when they host Georgia, South Carolina, Arkansas, and LSU? Miss. State is not nearly as talented as those teams are.
Another thing to look at is the fact that early in the season, Home Teams seemed to be very popular with the gamblers. Last season, State started off with a 45-7 thrashing of Jackson State, only to get crushed by Auburn at Auburn in week 2. The fact of the matter is that Croom has only had 1 winning season at State, back in 2007. He returned 15 starters in 2008, but could only manage to win 4 games.
The question here is simple. Is Auburn a legitimate player in the SEC West or not? We know that Miss. State is not. If you think that Auburn is a legitimate player, you should be taking Auburn and giving the 1 point or so. Pinny now has Miss. State as a 1 point favorite. My guess is that you are going to see a lot of late money come in on Auburn, so you may want to play this now, if you are going to take Auburn.
