I Have just made my first college football play of the season, and I am pretty certain this one will cash.
The Marshall Thundering Herd are getting 29 points against Ohio State. Now no doubt, the Buckeyes will probably win this game, but they wont win it by anywhere near this many points.
The Thundering Herd are a much much better team than anyone realizes, this is a school with a history of having some really good football teams. In fact, they had an unbeaten season not that long ago. Of course they have fallen off after Randy Moss and Chad Pennington, but this is still a very good team and Ohio State isnt winning this game by 30 points.
Marshall is returning 14 starters from last years team which finished 7-6 including Beating a pretty good Ohio U team in the bowl game. Thats Ohio University beating Ohio State. They are returning 7 starters on both sides of the ball. On offense QB Brian Anderson returns. Anderson is a very capable QB as last year he had 2646 yards and 14 TD's Passing.
Also, in the Backfied Marshall is returning two great running backs. Both Martin Ward and Edwards can and will run the ball against this Ohio State defense.
On Defense, the Thundering Herd are strong enough to slow the Buckeyes down. The Buckeyes will score for sure, and I wouldnt be surprised if they score 27-31 points, but The Herds defense is strong enough that the Buckeyes sure wont be scoring at will, and will have to work for every point they get.
Returning on Defense are Delvin Johnson, Brandon Bullock, and Johnny Jones who average out at 6'4 and 330 Pounds. So this is a pretty nice sized defensive unit that the Thundering Herd are running out there. Also returning is defensive Back Dequan Bembey who recorded 53 tackles last year. In all, the Thundering Herd have 40 returning players on the team this year. The only major loss this team had was Darius Marshall.
On the other side, the Buckeyees have lost Jim Cordle, Thadeus Gibson, Worthington, Spitler, Coleman, Russell, Petrey, and Thoma.
I am not saying the Buckeyes arent good. They are. But this team lost some good defenders from last years team, and I think it will take a while for the Chemistry to jell. This may turn into another great defensive unit, but it will take time, especially considering that on average, this is an undersized defensive unit.
Another factor in this game may be the look ahead factor. I have to wwonder just how seriously the Buckeyes are even taking the Thundering Herd considring that Ohio State plays Miami in their second game. You have to believe that very little prep time has been dedicated to Marshall, and mush more to the Miami game.
On the other hand, you know that Marshall hasnt overlooked Ohio State. They have been preparing for this game since the beginning of practice. Will the Buckeyes even try to win this game by 30 ? or if they get a comfortable 17-20 point lead late 3rd quarter, will they rest and begin preparing for Miami ?
Who knows, but I am confident that they couldnt cover 29 even if they give it 100%, which they wont. This is one of those game where the true line is 17-20 and the linesmakers have bumped it up 10 more points knowing full well that every Tom, Dick, and Harry is going to pound the Buckeyes at any price.
Why should the linesmakers let Tom, Dick, and Harry have Ohio State -17 when they will bet it just as quickly when the line is Ohio State -30 ?
Ohio State isnt that good and Marshall isnt that bad and 29 points is way too many here.
