When is it ok to throw long?

Like i play Madden 10 on PS3. I throw long bombs every now and then. Most of them gets intercepted. If i run the ball Defense will pick an stop run play. So when is it ok go for 30 or 40 yard passing play?

Take what the defense gives you, make your progressions and reads, also look into your matchups and when you get 1v1 coverage you need to exploit
