Cincinnati lost 10 starters on defense. They have a pretty decent QB in Tony Pike, and they have some skilled WRs.

I just can't pull the trigger on Cincy.

Schiano is/has been pretty consistent. He is competitive in the Big East, he recruits as good as you can at Rutgers. I mean, after all, it is Rutgers.

I like Rutgers because they can and will run the ball. I give them a significant edge on defense, and they are playing at home.

Rutgers by a touch is my call.

Cincy + the points looks best to me. Rutgers starting a 5th year senior who has barely taken any snaps, No Kenny Britt. I'd rather side with the team whose offense is more intact. Rutgers D will make the game close.

I've been waiting for this game for a while. Pike and Gilyard are going to go wild on offense. The defense is no problem for Cincy because of the change to 3-4 and most of those guys have playing experience. Cincy is hungry for more after making the Orange Bowl last year. Rutgers new QB is going to struggle. I like the Bearcats to win this one outright. I'm a student at UC, so perhaps my judgement is clouded. Oh well.

Cinci has a new defensive scheme since losing 10 starters on Defense, but Rutgers only returns 6 Def starters.

Now let's look at Cinci which by the way won the Big East last year.

As you can see the offense will do fine for Cinci.

Rutgers is strong at O-Line and thus must get the running game going. I suspect Cinci knows this and will look to stop the run. With no QB experience it's a must for Rutgers to get the running game going or it will be a long day for the defense.

Rutgers is a slight favorite at home, but I'll take the points and Cinci with the offense and look for Rutgers to struggle scoring.

There a lot of reasons that number dropping down i got the under at 48. Very strong winds 2day could bother cin passing gm and regardless of who running(imo hearing really good things bout 1 of rutgers rbs) rutgers will run and control the ball cin may be the side but the under is where my money at. Rutgers has the best returning O-Line but not QB as you can see 36 yards passing last year. Rutgers probably also has the best returning O-Line in the Big East.

OFFENSE
Quarterback
The Bearcats were seemingly dealt a blow when 2007 starter, Ben Mauk, who threw a BIG EAST-best 31 touchdown passes, was denied in his bid for a sixth year of eligibility. And things appeared to take a turn for the worse when Opening Day starter Dustin Grutza was injured in the second game of the year. But Tony Pike came off the bench to establish himself as one of the BIG EAST’s best signal-callers in 2008. Pike completed 199 of 324 passes for 2,407 yards and 19 touchdowns last season and showed the poise and ability to run Kelly’s quick-strike offense. Pike is firmly entrenched as the starter and is a solid candidate for BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2009. Chazz Anderson is a more-than-capable backup who saw action in a starting role when Pike was sidelined last year.

Running Back
Cincinnati doesn’t boast a workhorse-type of running back who will take the ball 30 times a game, instead relying on a solid group of players who give Kelly plenty of options in the backfield. The Bearcats return their four top runners from last year, including a pair of 600-yard backs in Jacob Ramsey and John Goebel. Ramsey picked up 664 yards and had two touchdowns on the ground, while Goebel had a team-high seven rushing TDs to go with 697 yards. Isaiah Pead was impressive as a true freshman last season, averaging 6.5 yards per carry in limited action.

Offensive Line
Cincinnati has three-fifths of its starting offensive line from 2008 back. The Bearcats will miss the production of All-BIG EAST guard Trevor Canfield, but still has proven experience up front. Jeff Linkenbach started every game at tackle in 2008 and will be the everyday man at left tackle. Chris Jurek, meanwhile, enters his third year as the Bearcats’ starting center. Jason Kelce moved into a starting spot last season and is expected to be the regular at left guard. C.J. Cobb will take over at right guard, while Alex Hoffman will be at right tackle after seeing action as a spot starter and key reserve.

Wide Receiver
Cincinnati boasted a pair of 1,000-yard receivers last year in Mardy Gilyard and Dominick Goodman, who established themselves among the best in BIG EAST history. Goodman completed his career ranked second in the BIG EAST in all-time receptions (204), while Gilyard finished with 81 receptions last season to rank fourth on the conference’s single-season chart. Goodman’s departure means that Gilyard might have to play an even greater part in the offense. Armon Binns saw spot duty in each of the last two years and could be ready to step in as a starter at wideout, while D.J. Woods figures to get the nod as the Bearcats’ slot receiver.

DEFENSE
Defensive Line
The change of seasons appears to have hit Cincinnati’s defensive line the hardest as the Bearcats lose all four starters up front, including a pair of stars in Connor Barwin and Terrill Byrd. Defensive end Curtis Young will be called upon to be a regular starter this year after playing in all 14 games last season. Young finished with four sacks, good for fourth on the team, after getting a regular spot in the rotation last year. Derek Wolfe saw spot duty as a true freshman last year and has been impressive enough in the preseason to be penciled in as a starter as a sophomore. Ricardo Mathews and John Hughes will take over as starters at defensive tackle. Both players saw plenty of snaps last season and should make seamless transitions to their increased roles.

Linebacker
Just as with the defensive line, Cincinnati likewise lost its entire group of starting linebackers from last year. The most experienced player there is Andre Revels, who played in 13 games and finished seventh on the team in tackles last season (59). J.K. Schaffer also played in 13 games as a true freshman in 2008 and is projected to take over as the starting weakside linebacker. Craig Carey played in 12 games last season and could take over on the strong side.

Secondary
The lone returning starter on Cincinnati’s defense is free safety Aaron Webster, who made 60 tackles and had one interception in 2008. Webster leads a defensive backfield that will have to replace a pair of standouts in cornerbacks Mike Mickens and DeAngelo Smith. Drew Frey will move into the everyday role at strong safety after seeing spot duty as a redshirt freshman last year. Veteran Brad Jones moves into one cornerback spot on the heels of a two-interception season, while Marcus Barnett is projected to man the other corner. Barnett is a converted receiver who led the BIG EAST with 13 touchdown receptions in 2007.

SPECIAL TEAMS
Cincinnati has had the last two BIG EAST Special Teams Players of the Year in Gilyard and punter Kevin Huber. Kicker Jake Rogers is a solid candidate to give the Bearcats a third straight winner. Rogers made 16 of 23 field goal attempts last season and is capable of scoring from long distance. Rogers also will take over the punting chores following Huber’s departure. Gilyard, meanwhile, remains dangerous on kickoff returns after scoring two TDs last year.

OFFENSE
Quarterback
Just as Rutgers had to replace its most prolific running back in school history (Ray Rice) last year, the Scarlet Knights enter the 2009 season looking to replace their post decorated passer in Mike Teel. Teel threw for more career yards (9.383) and touchdowns (59) than any previous Rutgers quarterback and was behind center for the program’s ascension to the national spotlight.

The leading candidates to take over at quarterback are Jabu Lovelace and Domenic Natale. Lovelace was the primary backup to Teel in 2007, but was limited to just two games due to an ankle injury last season. Natale saw spot duty a year ago after transferring from Michigan State.

Running Back
Rutgers is fairly well stacked in the offensive backfield thanks to the return of its top four runners from last year. Kordell Young ran for 554 yards and five touchdowns in eight games last season, while Jourdan Brooks had a team-high six rushing TDs to go with 516 yards on the ground. Joe Martinek racked up 404 rushing yards with four TDs, and Mason Robinson saw significant carries as well. Jack Corcoran is back as the starting fullback, and he provides another solid option in the game plan.

Offensive Line
Rutgers also boasts quality and quantity on the offensive line. All five starters from last year are back, while the Scarlet Knights return nine of their top 10 players from last year’s depth chart. The most decorated player up front is left tackle Anthony Davis, who enters his junior year as one of the most highly regarded linemen in the nation. Davis earned freshman all-America status as a guard in 2007 and was an All-BIG EAST Second Team pick last year in his first season at tackle. Right tackle Kevin Haslam started all 13 games last year after spending most of the 2007 season at guard. Senior Ryan Blaszczyk enters his third year as the starting center and has proven himself as one of best in the BIG EAST. Caleb Ruch and Art Forst return to man the guard positions after both players earned starting roles as freshmen in 2008.

Wide Receiver
Rutgers lost its top two receivers to the NFL in Britt and Underwood, providing opportunities for some younger players to move into the starting lineup. The top returner is Tim Brown, who had 565 receiving yards and averaged 20.9 yards per reception last year. Julian Hayes, Tim Wright and Andrew DePaola are expected to have more of a say in the offense in 2009.

DEFENSE
Defensive Line
The Scarlet Knights return two starters on the defensive line in George Johnson and Alex Silvestro. Johnson enters his third year as a starter after registering 39 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, two sacks and an interception at defensive end last year. Silvestro started all 13 games in 2008, contributing 43 tackles and two sacks. Jonathan Freeny was a regular in the rotation last year and could emerge as a starter at tackle in 2009, while Charlie Noonan and Eric LeGrand are in the mix at tackle as well.

Linebacker
Rutgers lost leading tackler Kevin Malast to graduation, but the Scarlet Knights expect to showcase one of the top linebacker units in the BIG EAST nonetheless. Ryan D’Imperio was an All-BIG EAST Second Team selection last year after he had 93 tackles, 5.5 sacks, 12.5 tackles for loss, an interception and two fumble recoveries. He ranked fifth in the BIG EAST in tackles, second among returing players.

Damaso Munoz (45 tackles) took over at strong-side linebacker for the last five games of last season and is penciled in at that spot again. Manny Abreu (33 tackles) made eight starts and played in every game as a redshirt freshman in 2008 and could emerge as an impact player at weak-side linebacker this season. Antonio Lowery appeared in every game last year, making 19 stops, and should be a candidate on the outside.

Secondary
The Scarlet Knights look to offset the loss of two players from the secondary who were chosen in the NFL Draft (safety Courtney Greene and cornerback Jason McCourty). Strong safety Joe Lefeged and free safety Zaire Kitchen provide experience and toughness in the defensive backfield while Devin McCourty — Jason’s twin brother — is back for his fourth year as a starting cornerback. Kitchen had a team-high three forced fumbles and Lefeged was the Scarlet Knights’ fourth-leading tackler (72). McCourty, meanwhile, had a team-leading seven pass breakups.

SPECIAL TEAMS
Rutgers introduced a pair of new kicking specialists last year in kicker San San Te and punter Teddy Dellaganna. Both players proved capable in their roles, making special teams an area of strength for the Scarlet Knights. Te was 12-for-17 in field goals, including three field goals in the bowl win against North Carolina State, and was 45-of-48 on PATs. Dellaganna averaged 41.2 yards per punt to rank in the top half of BIG EAST punters.
